In the 21st century, several professions are adapting with
changes and pacing with new useful technologies for their
survival and advancement. In this century creation of new
knowledge, capturing of new ideals promptly and their
timely application is crucial for success in any endeavor.
Integration of ideas to find solutions to complex problems,
technological convergence to develop better and cheaper
products, and progression towards greater interface
between policy, strategy, research, practice and service to
clientele is taking place.
A library is a collection of sources of
information and similar resources,
made accessible to a defined
community for reference or borrowing.
It provides physical or digital access to
material, and may be a physical
building or room, or a virtual space, or
both. A library's collection can include
books, periodicals, newspapers,
manuscripts, films, maps, prints,
documents, microform, CDs, cassettes,
videotapes, DVDs, e-books, audio
books, databases, and other format.
Technology is the collection of techniques, skills,
methods and processes used in the production
of goods or services or in the accomplishment of
objectives, such as scientific investigation.
Libraries and information
centers are undergoing
metamorphosis and are
reengineering their services,
re-skilling their staff and
reorganizing their work space
in consonance with changing
information systems, better
and more effective information
communication channels, and
users’ preferences for
accessing information.
Ongoing Development in Libraries and Information
Centers
Technology (ICT) has transformed library services globally. Most
current information are recorded in electronic format, ICT has
also contributed to the performance of librarians in their duties
such as in cataloguing, reference services, circulation
management, serials control etc. ICT has contributed to the
library in the following specific ways.
Technologies used in Library
Library Management System
Software is a software used
to manages the catalog of a
library. This helps to keep the
records of whole transactions
of the books available in the
library.
Library Management Software
Library automation is the application of ICTs to library operations
and services.
Library automation
DDS is concerned with the supply of document to the user on demand
either in original or its photocopies irrespective of the location and form
of original document. The Document Delivery Centre (DDC) on demand,
deliver the copies of papers from learned journals, conference
proceedings and other material available in their collection. Every DDC
will also make the required effort to procure and supply the paper from
other institution.
Document Delivery Service
DDS
OPAC means Online
Public Access Catalog.
It is an online database
of materials held by a
library or a group of
library. Users search a
library catalog
principally to locate
books and other
material available at a
library.
OPAC
Radio-Frequency
Identification uses
electro-magnetic fields
to automatically
identify and track tags
attached to object. The
tags contain
electronically stored
information.
RFID(Radio Frequency Identification)
In computing a scanner often
abbreviated although the term
is ambiguous out of
context(Barcode Scanner, CAT
scanner, etc.) is a device that
optically scan image, printed
text, handwriting or an object
and convert it into a digital
image or text file.
Scanner
Instant Massaging is a
type of online chat
which offers real time
text transmission over
the internet. A LAN
Messenger operates in
a similar way over a
Local Area Network.
Instant Messaging service
CD-search is the greater
invention of modern
technology. User or patrons
can sometimes search their
information through the CD-
search when their required
information is not found in
traditional way.
CD Search
A photocopier (also known as a
copier or copy machine) is a
machine that makes paper copies
of documents and other visual
image quickly and cheaply. Most
current photocopiers use a
technology called xerography, a
dry process that uses electrostatic
charges on a light sensitive
photoreceptor to first attract and
then transfer toner particles onto
paper in the form of an image.
Photocopier
A barcode reader is an electronic
device that can read and output
printed barcode to a computer.
Barcode Reader
Cyber café is also
known as “internet
café”. It is a place
which provides
Internet access to
the public usually
for free or for a little
cost.
Cyber cafe Service
Electronic mail is a
method of exchanging
digital messages
between the user who
have an email id. Email
operates across
computer networks,
now primarily the
computer.
Email Service
library web is the mirror of
a library. It is the digital
version of a library. Peoples
can access their required
information into the
website of the library. It is
called the information
space of a library in digital
version.
Web Service
The purpose of a
current
awareness
service(CAS) is to
inform the users
about new
acquisitions in
their libraries.
Current Awareness Service
Cloud computing is a
kind of internet based
computing that
provides shared
processing resources
and data to computers
and other devices on
demand.
Cloud Computing
In the future library service,
we can get some flying
machine which serves the
user needs within a few
seconds. People can meet
their need by ordering their
demand to the library from
home and meet their
requirements by this
service.
Book Delivery Drone
E-book means
electronic book. An e-
book or a digital book
is a book published in
digital form, which
contains text, image or
both, readable on
computers or other
electronic devices
E-book
To building up a library totally technology oriented or to set up a
new technology a library faced some common problem. Some of
them are -
Problems of using technology in library
•Financial problem
•Lack of knowledge
•Lack of skilled professional
•Environment.
•Technologist
•Lack of up-to-date information
•Inexperienced staff.
•Copyright
•Permanent Storage Problem
• User authentication
•Lack of knowledge about using technology among
the user and staff.
•Lack of instrument
To overcome the barriers or problem we can follow the
following instruction.
Recommendations
•Train the staff
•Inform the ministry about the technology
•Increase budget
•Storage
•Recruit the skilled personnel
•Building the constitution for recruitment
•Recruit the technologist to operate the
technologies
•Building up the proper infrastructure
•Copyright law
•Make awareness
Libraries around the world have been working on this daunting
set of challenges for several years now. They have created many
digital library initiatives and projects, and have formed various
national schemes for jointly exploring key issues. From the
afforested description we may learn about the library
technology and the problem and solution of using library
technology. In the modern world the library which has not yet
developed is valueless. It is suffering from low user.
