Empathy Map
SAY
 “School has made me try a lot of things, questions a lot of paths”
 “As you keep narrowing down… you get more specialized and realize that you like a certain field”
 “There are different communities- design community, friends community, professional community. By
knowing people, going to events that opens up more opportunities that classes can‟t give you”
 “I found work through my professor once (through a club, he saw my work)”
 “Internships are more valuable than schools- more world experience, but maybe it‟s the nature of classes at
Berkeley, others give you more people interaction. Berkeley classes are more about the hypothetical and
classes are larger.”
 “Internships are about the development process, ideas, stuff gets implemented”
 “Not really graded in an internship- you make the most of your experience and push out things. Versus in
school, your project is graded rather than „your ability‟”
 “I want to work for a small company that has a big brother corporate. Like Colossal in SF- 12 people in their
studio in a giant brick house, they work and create things, but their parent company is larger. They get the
creative…they get to do their thing, but they get the reassurance and backing of the bigger partner. I like the
stability of corporate but the flexibility of the smaller company”
 “In smaller companies, things get deployed right away. It‟s really rewarding. Also, it‟s more about the
process- you can‟t learn If something‟s wrong (or right) unless you try it.”
 “I want to work on something that makes a difference in people‟s lives, but it doesn‟t have to be life-
changing.I want to make people‟s lives easier. [I want my work to have a purpose rather than just to
generate profit. I want to do good.]”
 “I‟m sure that I‟ll find a job, but I don‟t know if I‟ll find one that I like—long-term.”
 “I would rather be the person making the product rather than selling it.”
 “ I would want to work for a creative or design agency because the products keep changing- which is good
and bad. [Interesting- new products, Bad- not in control, up to the client]
THINK
 Confident that she can find a job after she
graduates
 She values networking parties and opportunities
 Personal connections with important people can
lead to great opportunities
 When you feel that a job has become to repetitive
and not challenging enough, it has become time
to move on to the next thing
FEEL
 Values financial security
 Needs an outlet for creative thinking
 Is afraid to be stuck in the 9 to 5
 Wants to explore the world before committing to a
job or workplace environment that does not
satisfy her creative needs or her social, out of the
office needs
 Feels unsure if she will be able to find the „right‟
job for sure that will fill her financial and creative
needs
Problem Statement
 Stakeholder Description: creative, people
person, traditional in her personal
life, untraditional in her professional
life, empathetic
 Stakeholder needs a way to find and secure a
job after she graduates college that fulfills both
her financial needs as well as her creative needs
because she needs to be able to self-sufficient
(no longer rely on her parents for money), and
she also needs to figure out her long-term plan
(which her creative work will guide her to).
