- 6. Tips for Installing EndNote • Select “Custom” Install and select ALL import filters, connection files, and output styles. • Install after Word to enable CWYW • Install automatic updates! • EndNote will periodically update their software to improve performance and add new features.

- 8. Adding References to a Library • Direct import (“Open”)* • Manual import (“Save”)* • Downloads a separate citation file. • Manual entry • Sometimes necessary (primary sources, unique documents, personal communication, anything without an “export” file) *Must have correct import filters!

- 10. Integrated/Online Search • Connection Files enable you to search for citations from within EndNote. • Choose “Integrated Library & Online Search Mode” to search hundreds of databases AND save the results.

Adding PDFs/other documents • “Find Full Text” will search subscribed content and open access resources for URLs and full text PDFs. • Use “File Attachments” to add existing PDFs and other files from your computer to a reference. • Import existing PDFs into EndNote without references, and let EndNote add the citation information.

Create Groups • New Groups (created manually; click-and-drag references to a new group) • Smart Groups (automatically group all references with a particular criteria) • Combination Groups (combine references from New Groups and Smart Groups) • Group Sets (set up subcategories based on classes, subjects, readings, published papers, or types of resources)

- #12: You can ask EndNote to find full-text PDFs (or URL links to full text) for you, or you can attach PDFs manually. Remember that just because EndNote doesn’t find a PDF doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Some systems have firewalls that prevent easy download.
- #13: You can also create groups of citations. Create a group and manually add your citations, or create a “Smart Group” and select search terms/fields so that EndNote can search and automatically add to that group!
