Background
Equinix is driving new innovation in its data centres worldwide, pushing the boundaries
of data centre design, leveraging intelligent new approaches and harnessing natural
resources responsibly in creative ways.
Our new UK data centre LD6 is being built at our London Slough campus, following the
successful precedents of both LD4 and LD5. Developing a new facility ‘from scratch’,
unconstrained by existing architecture means we can fully consider all aspects of the
design, and how to modify and improve the technology accordingly.
Business drivers for LD6
• Creating a new flagship data centre for Platform Equinix™
• Expanding the UK’s largest, fastest-growing and most network-dense data
centre environment at our London Slough campus alongside LD4 and LD5
• Responding to continuing demand from customers across a range of sectors
including financial services, digital content, mobile, cloud and enterprise
• Supporting customer continuity and future expansion
Opportunities and Key Facts about Equinix LD6
Phase 1 target launch:
Q1 2015
Initial capacity:
1,385 cabinets
Distance from airports:
•	11.3 mi (18.6 km) from London Heathrow Airport (LHR)
•	33.4 mi (54.2 km) from London City Airport (LCY)
Colocation space when LD6 complete:
8,000 square metres (86,000 square feet; 2,770 cabinet equivalents)
London Slough campus total colocation space on LD6 completion:
36,000 square metres (388,000 square feet)
Interconnections:
1000+ diverse dark fibre links
Power:
1.5 kVA/m² UPS capacity
Cooling and Energy Efficiency:
•	LD6 aims to become accredited to gold energy efficiency by Leaders in Energy &
Environmental Design (LEED).
•	Equinix plans to achieve this with the aid of an innovative cooling system, which will
utilise mass air-cooling technology with indirect heat exchange. This will contribute
to LD6 having lower energy consumption and a smaller carbon footprint than other
facilities of its kind.
•	Over 85% free cooling to data halls from the use of indirect evaporative cooling AHUs
with an annual average PUE of 1.2.
•	Rainwater harvesting will reduce mains water consumption of AHUs. A bore hole
to underground water source will reduce the impact and dependence upon local
distribution networks.
•	Natural ventilation will be used within the LD6 office building.
•	High efficiency heating/cooling plant for FOH and Logistics buildings, including heat
pumps for LTHW.
