FACTUAL
PROGRAMMING
The final half term
What were we doing before the holiday?
You have now filmed 3 out of the 4 factual
programmes.
Today
• Team Morgan will be filming their TV show in the studio
• The other teams will be:
• collecting together all their pre-production planning for
their TV show and handing this in to moodle ‘Factual
programming planning’.
• Collecting your individual research, writing up your
findings and handing this in to the moodle assignment
‘Factual programming research’.
Where are we at?
• (By the end of today) you will all have filmed your TV
show.
• Your planning document & research for the TV show is
due.
What have you still got to produce for this
unit?
• A written essay about:
• Different types of factual programming including TV news and
documentaries.
• The issues which affect factual programme producers including
bias, truth, being objective (etc…) and how producers work around
these.
Over the next few weeks
• We will be focused on this theory work in our Wednesday
lessons.
• You will be watching a series of factual programmes
including Grizzly Man & Louis Theroux.
• You will be analysing these in class and writing up your
findings each week.
• You will then write your in depth, evaluative theory work.
This report is your chance to show off
your knowledge
Work hard in these lessons and keep focused on doing
well!
You get marked on 4 things for this unit:
1. Your understanding of factual programmes
2. Your understanding of the issues which affect factual
programme producers
3. Your planning & research for your show
4. Your final show
Theory: Factual programmes essay
Practical: planning & research portfolio
Practical: Your final video
This report is your chance to show off
your knowledge
If you get a low mark in the essay, what happens to your
overall mark for the whole unit?
It drops to your lowest mark out of the 3 assignments.
1. Your understanding of factual programmes
2. Your understanding of the issues which affect factual
programme producers
3. Your planning & research for your show
4. Your final show
Theory: Factual programmes essay
Practical: planning & research portfolio
Practical: Your final video
If you want to know the secret to getting
good marks in your report its easy:
• Make notes during lectures and seminars.
• Work hard during class-time: stay focused on the task at
hand & don’t get distracted.
• Look over your notes at home and add to them while its
fresh in your mind.
• Start your assignment as soon as you get it; don’t leave it
till later.
• If you get stuck or you’re unsure, ask! Ask me, ask each
other. Everyone needs a helping hand at one time or
another.
Next week
We will start the theory part of this assignment, looking at
the different things we expect to see in different types of
factual programme.
You will be given your brief so you can see exactly what the
theory report will cover and we will work through these
different points week on week.
Learning about factual programming is interesting; it is the
biggest part of the UK’s TV industry and many of you will
end up working in it.
For today though….
• Team Morgan: get prepared and get in the studio.
• Everyone else spend the morning gathering together your
planning for your TV show (proposal, production schedule
& milestones, budget etc…) and hand this in to moodle
• When this is done spend some more time working on your
research for your factual programme. This is due in.
