The Proposal – Content Overview
and Cinematic Technique
• A scene by scene
summary of your entire
short film...
• … including information
about your uses of
cinematic technique
• Cinematography
• Editing
• Sound
• Mise en Scene
• Break it down in a way that makes sense to you
BUT this doesn't need to be a shot by shot
summary
• You don't need to hunt around to include big
ideas about every technique just for the sake of it
– far better to identify one or two that you really
focus on and talk briefly about the others
• Example – in the 'split screen' student example
you've worked on I think cinematography is the
big idea, and other things work around that.
The Proposal – Contributors, Locations,
Assets, Equipment
• Contributors – who is involved in front of the camera
and behind the camera – why them?
• Locations -
• Requirements
• Recce
• Risk Assessment
• Final plans
• Assets – what are you bringing in to the project to use
• SFX
• Music
• Equipment – what are you going to use
• Use your equipment lists from Unit 10, adapted as
necessary
• You need to show you are
organised, and that you are very
deliberately and thoughtfully
making these decisions in order
to fulfill the brief in the best but
also the most practical and
straightforward way
• This is part of you saying 'I can do
this on time and on budget
because I'm very organised'.
The Proposal – Legal and Ethical Issues
 Copyright – negotiating fees for copyright
protected music.
 It won't be cheap - £2000 for 30 seconds
of a recent popular single for a non-profit
project
 It might be crucial - the right music can
be exactly what draws your target
audience in
 If you are employing children, or featuring
animals, there will be other specific legal
issues
 Ethical issues might cover representations –
age-appropriate material - fairness...
• The crucial point here
is that you identify
legal and ethical
issues that are
relevant to your
project and explain
how they won't
present difficulties to
you.
The Proposal – Technical Considerations
 Specialist equipment – smoke machine?
 Specialist settings – a gym? In a car driving
down the road?
 Visual and special effects?
 Voice-over
 Graphics and onscreen text
 You might not have anything specific to
include here.
• This is about the
specific special skills
or equipment that
might be needed
• Again, it's important
that what you write
her is directly relevant
to your plans
• This might include...
The Proposal – Planning and Scheduling
 A budget
 Use your knowledge of
budgeting from Unit 10
 Use the costs list on the blog
 Don't forget fees for music
copyright licensing
 Show, in all of this planning,
that you can do this task on
time and on budget
• A week by week production
plan
• You need to include time for
pre production and planning
• You need to be finished
in very good time before
the launch date
• Week by week planning is
good enough for this task
The Task
1. The Rationale
2. The Pitch
3. The Proposal
4. The Treatment
• 10 hours general preparation – 4 sessions of 2½ hours each. This is session 3.
• 2 hours writing up final notes
• 6 hours writing final assessment, with use of final notes
BIG PICTURE MY LEARNING
How did this
lesson fit into
your other
lessons?
What is my top
take- away from
the lesson?
Have you contributed to the lesson? Will you be able to improve
next lesson? Do you know what you need to go away and do?
o Are you keeping
up? Everything we've done is
on the blog – lesson by lesson.
o Keep looking back through the
blog, especially at the
examples of note taking. You
are preparing your longer notes
on the real brief
o Look back at your work from
Unit 10 LA B. A lot of what you
have to do in Activity 3 and 4 in
Unit 8 is very very similar to
that work.
