TIME
1. This is an externally assessed unit – marked by the exam board.
2. It is a prepared controlled assessment – you have ten hours preparation
time, 2 hours note taking time, and 6 hours to write up your final
assessment
3. You will take the final assessment on Thursday 9th January.
• During the 10 hours preparation you
can investigate the brief, the
audience, similar products and you
can make your initial pans
• During the 2 hours note taking you
have to take all the work you have
done and turn it into three pages of
notes you can take into the final
assessment with you
• During the 6 hours of final
assessment you have to write up
the whole of your final answer.
1. The Rationale – show you understand the brief and the
audience, do some textual analysis of similar texts, ideas
generation, audience research, initial proposals and
justification of your choice of project.
2. The Pitch – 350 words – this is why you should hire me to
make my brilliant idea in response to your commission
3. The Proposal – a piece at a time, this is how I will make my
product. Overview – scene by scene – cinematic ideas – legal
and ethical – equipment and personnel – health and safety -
location planning – production schedule – budget
4. The Treatment - storyboard and frame by frame justification
The Rationale
There is a range of content that we must cover in
preparation for the examination:
A1 Use of research and background material
A2 Understanding the client/commission
A3 Ideas generation
A4 The rationale for final ideaSo what is a commission? (A2)
A commission usually arrives at the doors of media producers via way of a client brief. The brief will normally
consist of essential information. The kind of information you receive will usually be:
•Name of client
•Audience
•Purpose
•Context
•Considerations
•Methods of creation e.g. video, website, leaflet, game etc.
These briefs happen all the time in the media, and knowing how to respond appropriately to a brief may well
be decisive in gaining commissions when working in real life media situations.
Lesson 1 overview and briefs
Have a look at the websites of the following three charity organisations. I want
you to make up imaginary briefs for at least two of them. Each brief must cover
the SIX bullet points and you have to include what medium/s the product must
consider for creation (video, website etc). Think carefully about whom the charity
will want to appeal to for the target audience, and use the website to research the
background to the charity and the context for the products that need to be made.
Remember, that for the exam you will NOT need to create a brief as you will have
one provided for you. BUT understanding what goes into making a brief is
essential if you are able to deconstruct the brief properly when you eventually
receive PART A.
Charity One: Barnardos
Charity Two: Scope
Charity Three: Acorns
Analysis
1.Have a look at the example from the BBC – what
are the similarities and what are the differences?
2.Have a look at other people's commissions –
what have they done better? What could they
learn from you?
BIG PICTURE MY LEARNING
How did this
lesson fit into
your other
lessons?
What is my top
take- away from
the lesson?
Have you contributed to the lesson? Will you be able to improve
next lesson? Do you know what you need to go away and do?
