This document describes a digital implementation of direct torque control (DTC) of an induction motor using an FPGA with a sliding mode observer. The key points are:
1. A DTC control scheme with an open-loop stator flux estimator has problems at low speeds and with stator resistance variation.
2. The paper proposes using a sliding mode observer to estimate the stator flux, current, and adapt the estimated stator resistance on an FPGA.
3. The DTC control system with sliding mode observer is designed using Xilinx System Generator blocks, synthesized for a Virtex-5 FPGA, and shown to have performance advantages over software solutions.
