GROW
2
• GROW is a mentoring process that can be used in mentoring
sessions to support goal setting and action planning.

ELENA
3
• During this PowerPoint, we will be looking at a brief
example of how this might work in practice and our
case study is that of Elena from Biological Sciences.

GOAL
4
• This stage focuses on helping you to visualise what you want to achieve
through describing the outcome you aspire to.
• This stage links clearly to the idea of making goals SMART.
• Of course it is not always easy to articulate a goal, so this is where you
must try to elaborate as fully as possible about where you want to be by
the end of the scheme.
• At this point we expect that your mentor will ask you open questions with
room to explain your motivations and objectives – try to be as open as
possible for this conversation.

ELENA’S GOAL
5
• Elena is a Biological Sciences student who is unsure what she
wants to do, but knows she has a love of animals.
• She would like to get a placement in her chosen career which
would start during August/September, but at the moment she
doesn’t know what to apply to.
• She decides that her initial goal is: To have worked out what
career she wants to pursue working with animals and to have
tried her favourite options out through a placement by the end
of the year.
LIMITLESS POTENTIAL | LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES | LIMITLESS IMPACT
CURRENT REALITY
6
• To move forward towards this goal, it is important to take account of
the current reality you are in.
• Questions to consider are:
• What kinds of things are happening in your life now? What, Who,
When? What does this mean for this goal?
• Have you taken any steps towards this goal already?
• Does this goal conflict with other aims you have?
• These are important questions as they can uncover all the pertinent
information and issues that may impact on achieving this goal.

ELENA’S CURRENT REALITY
7
• Elena talked about being behind, being worried about achieving
a good degree classification and the impact this may have on her
career options.
• She also highlighted her lack of contacts with people who work
with animals.
• She is concerned about the pressure of time and lacks
confidence in approaching people and feels she is the only
person lacking knowledge to get her a good job.
• She hasn’t done any research yet, she feels
overwhelmed and doesn’t know where to start.

OPTIONS
8
• This is a brainstorm. Try to come up with lots of solutions to the potential
barriers you’re facing (your mentor will facilitate this).
• Ask yourself the following questions:
• What could my mentor do that would help?
• What else could I do to help myself?
• If you could relieve one pressure in particular, would that help?
• What are the pros and cons of your potential solutions?
• How are you weighing up your options?
• What might you stop doing to help you reach your goal?
• What obstacles stand in your way?
• Although your mentor will assist you with this process, you should largely
be in control of answering all of these questions.

ELENA’S OPTIONS
9
• Elena realises that she should be looking at information about
these job options. She says she could talk to Careers to find out
where the best information is to look at.
• She also says one of her lecturers has a couple of contacts she
could talk to.
• Elena could do a few self reflective exercises to explore her
values and skills which could help her choose from the options
available. (these are in the ‘mentoring activities’ booklet)
• Her mentor then offers for her to come and have a tour around
her workplace to learn more about working in ecological
consultancy.

WILL
10
• Through looking at the goal and where you stand at the moment, you
should now be able to see how your goal may be achieved.
• What may be lacking is commitment. Ask yourself:
• What will I be doing, by when? What else will I need to do?
• What might get in the way? How can you overcome this?
• How can you stay motivated to achieve this?
• When shall progress be reviewed? Set a date to do this with your
mentor, but make sure you reflect independently before meeting
your mentor too.
• Give yourself a mark out of ten as to how likely you feel you are to achieve
the goal. A low mark suggests a need to work back through the process a
bit as you may not be as committed as you originally thought.
LIMITLESS POTENTIAL | LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES | LIMITLESS IMPACT
ELENA’S WILL
11
• Elena is very keen to read information and to speak to have a
tour of her mentor’s work place.
• Networking with other contacts makes her feel nervous. She
agrees to look into training in this area to help her overcome
this.
• She also doesn’t like psychological tests and isn’t keen on self-
analysis, but can see the benefit.
• Elena discusses the pros and cons of not doing the
self analysis and she concludes this is a good idea
and her will increases.
LIMITLESS POTENTIAL | LIMITLESS OPPORTUNITIES | LIMITLESS IMPACT
FACILITATION
12
• Remember that to succeed you need to own your goal.
• You should come up with the idea, buy in to it, eliminate barriers and feel
confident that you can achieve it.
• Facilitation is key. Your mentor is there to suggest and offer ideas but
they will likely do so sparingly when you are lacking ideas.
GROW can really help your mentoring, so feel
free to experiment with it and build your
confidence with this model.
