                                            SESSION 1

                            “AN OVERVIEW OF MATERIAL DESIGN”
Let´s think of as many reasons as possible for believing that as teaching professionals. We Costeños
   English teachers should contribute with exercises, activities and tasks of our own, home baked
                               materials for our Costeños Students”.

PURPOSE
    To analyze the concepts of materials, materials development and the differences between in-
     house or tailored-made materials and commercials materials.
    To identify the reasons for producing tailored-made materials or selecting already published
     materials.
    To raise awareness on the importance of designing our own instructional materials for the
     learning and teaching of a foreign languages.

WORKSHEET
1. Reading the assigned text (Selecting and developing Teaching/Learning Materials” or Guideline for
the production of in-house self access materials”). (15 minutes).

2. Based on your answer of the following questions, organize a comparative table.

    a. What is the author´s point of view on material design?
    b. Make a list of reasons to produce in house self access materials or select commercial ones
       (feel free to add your own reasons), depending on the assigned reading.
    c. List advantages and disadvantages

3. Be ready with your group about the following two ideas. What do they mean? Do you agree with
both of them, why or just with one of them. Why?
                                   “The material is the master of the class”
                                  “Materials help learning and teaching”
4. At the end of the class, present your comparative table and express your point of view about step
number 3.
