The Gramya Vikash Mancha (GVM) is a non-profit organization working to empower rural communities in Assam, particularly the underprivileged and women. Its vision is to create exploitation-free villages where people can live with dignity. Under a project funded by the Jamsetji Tata Trust, GVM worked from 2012-2015 to promote diversion-based irrigation in 3 districts of Assam affected by water scarcity. Activities included restoring water bodies, building irrigation structures, and training farmers. This improved access to water for crops, reducing costs and allowing cultivation of additional crops. Over 68 km of canals were restored in the first year alone, benefiting over 12,000 families.
