Lubna Alam is developing a model for integrating social web tools into curriculum to facilitate digital citizenship skills. The goal is to create an interactive learning environment where students can meaningfully participate, develop responsibility and ethics, and engage in collaborative knowledge building. Outcomes include building scenarios using social media for participation and assessment, surveying student experiences, creating a transferable Twitter model, collaborating on an online course book, publishing papers, and workshops for staff on integrating social tools.

- 2. Developing pedagogy 2.0 and a transferable model of learning and communication platform 2.0 to embed social web 2.0 tools in curriculum to facilitate digital citizenship.

Recent moves towards a learner driven interactive learning paradigm Today’s learners are future “citizen 2.0” Literacy in digital citizenship skills & Higher education My design and pedagogy embraces the traits and tenets of a personally responsible citizen (aka ‘good’ citizen) by teaching students how to participate meaningfully – to develop skills of digital citizenship and demonstrate responsibility, integrity, ethics and respect while also having a critical approach and be able to engage in learning in a way that shows collective responsibility
- 4. The design of the learning environment incorporates multiple participatory digital social tools where students can share ideas and co-create content to enable them to engage fully in the knowledge society

Outcomes Title Description Complete (tick) Digital citizenship skill building scenarios Develop a model of mashing up social media tools with existing Moodle site for communication and assessment within an unit ( Social Informatics) A set of scenarios that uses social media for participation, student engagement and collaborative knowledge building. ongoing Student experience survey Design & conduct a student survey to gather information on their experiences with digital tools and the ability of them to participate online for civic engagement. Twitter Model A transferable twitter model that uses twitter for multiple learning and communication purposes with peers and externals. A model of archiving tweets for future use and analysis. ongoing Reading brick The wiki site for Social informatics provides an opportunity to collaborate on building dynamic course curriculum and course content. Further the model shows how we can use collaborative knowledge building to create a book that will be used for future semesters. ongoing Scholarship & publication Write a second paper on how to embed digital citizenship skills with real scenarios & student survey data. One achieved. Dissemination of project outcomes Develop a hands-on workshop for staff about how to integrate social media into Moodle & possible learning scenarios. End of semester Investigate further research opportunities Extend collaboration with Catherine McLoughlin from ACU on further development of the delivery methods & scenarios for 2011.
