Educational Technology
Presented by Lori Dyer
New technologies have
change the way we teach
and the way our students
learn in numerous ways.
In this session we show
how you can confidently
implement technology in
your organisation and stay
relevant in this digital age.
● Welcome And Introduction
● Where To Start
● Change Management
● Technology
● Processes
● Q&A
● Further Reading / Exploration
Today’s agenda
Welcome And Introduction
● Lori Dyer, Head Programme Manager,
Circulus Education
● 6+ years of experience in implementing digital
technology in vocational education & training
(VET) and higher education throughout
Australia and NZ.
● A digital learning activist who believes in
reducing inefficiencies, duplication and
paperwork within the educational sector.
Who This Webinar Is Ideal For
● Educators / teachers with little to some experience
implementing educational technology and are
interested in seeing the possibilities technology can
bring to their classroom
● Those looking for clear guidance in the midst of a sea
of conflicting ideas
Where Do We Start? How?
● Start with baby steps (lower risk, get you comfortable)
● Do your research first – what’s being used, best practices, what’s
required,..
● Gap analysis & aligning IT strategy with business strategy
● Question: Where have you made your start?
Baby Steps
● Take things slowly, it’s alright.
● Don’t do the “Big Bang”
● Implement one thing at a time, in one area at a time
● Small, controlled pilots for release
● Push yourself just a little bit over the edge of your comfort zone,
each time.
Do Your Research
● Take time out to read what is happening out there
in the field - Horizon Report, HBR, LinkedIn Groups
● Key 2015 trends: social media, hybrid & collaborative
learning and students as co-creators instead of passive
consumers
● Chat to colleagues / Get a mentor
● Hire a professional
Take A Gap Analysis
● Take stock of where your organisation is at this moment. Be honest;
use company surveys, interviews, audits.
● Converse with senior management to decide what the desired state is
(not listing particular technologies or brands but business outcomes)
● Start making plans for how to get from current state to desired state
● Technology strategy MUST align directly with the business strategy.
● Get help if you need it!
How to Implement Educational Technology
Where have you made
your start?
Question
A Bit About Change Management
● Notoriously high failure rate of projects
● Knowledge management is required
● What about sustainability
● Success and horror stories
● according to IBM, only 40% of projects succeed.
● success definition: on time, on budget, on scope
● biggest reasons for failure: fuzzy business objectives,
communication issues, unrealistic schedules
● small is beautiful!
High Failure Rate Of Projects
● It’s more about the people than the technology
● Knowledge Management definition:
“A discipline that promotes an integrated approach to identifying, capturing,
evaluating, retrieving, and sharing all of an enterprise's information assets.
These assets may include databases, documents, policies, procedures, and
previously un-captured expertise and experience in individual workers." -
Duhon 1998 (Gartner)
● business culture is a huge indicator on success
Knowledge Management
● so, you’ve set it all up and then.. what?
● Knowledge management feeds into this (processes, people,
culture) to sustain the change in your company / school
● you need to plan for your sustainable future: ongoing webinars,
touch points, services, etc
What About Sustainability?
● horror story - when business processes and accountability not
sorted
● success story - flipped learning with Greg Green
