Welcome to Trello for
Newbies!

What is Trello?

Trello is a online project
management app

It helps you organize your
tasks and projects easily

It’s your digital “cork board"
or “white board” where

you can move tasks to another
board as a project progresses

It gives you a bigger picture of
the project’s completion status

It enables you to collaborate
with your team and assign tasks

It keeps all your projects in
one place on any device

Let’s start!

First, you’ll need to create a
Trello account

Open your favourite web browser

Type trello.com in the address bar and hit Enter

This is Trello’s home page

Click Sign up or Sign up - It’s Free

Enter your Name, Email and Password

Click Create New Account

You can also Sign up with Google

Click Check your inbox to conﬁrm your email
address

Sign in to your email account

Enter your email and click Next

Enter your Password and click Sign In

Look for the conﬁrmation email from Trello and
open it

Click Verify Address

This is your Trello dashboard

The main elements of Trello
are Boards, Lists and Cards

This is an example of a Trello Board

Think of it as a “virtual” white
board or cork board

that represents your project

It’s a list of lists, ﬁlled with
cards

It’s used to organize tasks on
lists

This is an
example of a
Trello List

Lists keep cards(tasks)
organized in their stages of
progress

It can be used to create
workﬂows,

may serve as a storage of
ideas

Lastly, it can be moved across
boards as a project progresses

This is an example of a Trello Card

A Card is the foundation of a
board

It represents a task or idea
organised into lists

You can add an unlimited
number of cards to a board

Let’s Create A Board

Click the plus (+) icon to add a new board

You can create boards or teams

Click Create Board to add a personal board or

Click Create Personal Team or Create Business
Team

Let’s create a board ﬁrst

Give your board a Title (name of task/project)

Click Create a team if the task/project involves a
team

Give your team a name and click Create

Click Change to change the privacy options of
the board

Choose from
Private, Team or
Public then
click Create

This is your new board

To change the background,
click Change Backgound

Choose the color you want

Voila! Background color has been changed

Let’s Create A List

Click Add a list

Give your list a name and click Save

Let’s Create A Card

Click Add a card under a list

Give your card a short description and click
Add

Add more cards under a list if needed

Let’s Edit A Card

Customize cards to contain
information and facilitate project
collaboration

Click on a card

This is a card’s content

Take note of the 5 main sections

Description, Comments, Activity, Add and
Actions

Description Section

Click Edit to edit the card’s description

Comments Section

Enter your comments here

Click this to add an attachment

Select an attachment or attach a link and click
Attach

Click this to mention a team member

Enter team member’s Trello username here

Click this to insert an emoji

Search, select or upload an emoji

Click this to add a card in your comment

Type the name of the card and click it

Click Send once you’re ﬁnished commenting

Activity Section

Activity section displays the actions made on
your card

Add Section

This is the Add
section

Click this to
add Team
Members to
your card

Click this to
add Labels to
your card

Click the pencil
icon beside a
color or

Click Create a
new label

Give your label
a name and
then click Save

This is your
new label

The label is now added to your card

Click this to
add a Checklist
to your card

Give your
checklist a
name and then
click Add

Add an item to your checklist

Add another item to your checklist

Check the box beside if the item is completed

You can also hide completed items

Click Delete to delete the checklist

Click Delete Checklist to completely delete it

Click this to
add a Due Date
to your card

Select the day, enter the time and click Save

The card now has a due date

Click this to
add an
Attachment to
your card

Actions Section

Move card to any board or list

Copy card to any board or list

Member can subscribe to get notiﬁed of actions
on the card

Archive ﬁnished cards (can be retrieved later)

Close the card and go back to your board

Click Show Menu

Select Power-Ups

Power-Ups are extra features and
integrations that make your
boards more powerful

Look for Calendar and click Enable

Calendar Power-Up is now enabled.
Click Calendar.

Customizing Your Board

Click Add Members to add someone to your
board

Click Filter Cards to ﬁlter cards based on their
labels

Click Add Stickers to add cool stickers to your
cards

Drag the sticker to the top of card to add it

Click More for
other board
options

Click Settings

Change your
board settings
here

Copying Boards, Lists and
Cards

Copying Cards

Click Copy Card on the Actions section of a
card

Choose the board you want to copy it to

Choose the position of the card on the list

Click Create Card

Copying Lists

Click the ellipsis icon beside the list name

Give your copied list a name and
click Create List

List has been copied

Copying Boards

Click Copy Board

Give your copied board a title and click Create

Click the star icon to favourite the board

This will show your board on top of the boards
list

Click your name to edit your proﬁle

See your activity here

View cards assigned to you here

Check account details and credentials here

Maximize Tello’s keyboard shortcuts

Trello Tricks

You can copy and paste lists
from Excel to Trello

Every item on the list will be
converted to a card

You can drag and drop things
(cards, lists, etc) in Trello

You can also drag and drop
URLs onto cards

Filter cards assigned to you
by pressing “Q”
