How to use process mining as an internal auditor
Atlas Copco is the world's leading developer and producer of air compressors. They are also active in vacuum, industrial, and power technology. As a decentralized group, they have complex processes that span multiple countries. Lieven analyzed both the invoicing process and the procurement process at Atlas Copco. First, he showed step-by-step how he used process mining as an investigative tool to discover the happy flow and unexpected variations. He followed the evidence in multiple iterations to find the root causes for these variations. By exploring different perspectives, like the suppliers and the individual workflows of the employees, he ultimately discovered a bug in the IT system that - without anyone noticing - had led to an enormous workload for one of his colleagues. In the second part, he showed how he answered concrete questions about the process. Even simple questions like 'How much time is it from requisition to purchase order archive?' need careful attention and the application of multiple filters to get the right results. Lieven illustrates this way of working and the mindset required of an exemplary process miner.
