Integration of Smart Grid
with Renewable Energy for
Energy Demand
Management
Presentation by
Sagar D
durgada.sagar.1@gmail.com
Why do we require this integration?
• Traditional electric grid – unable - reliable, efficient & clean energy
• Rapid industrialization
• Non-Renewable energy resources – major health hazards
• The solution - FutureVision – Smart Grid - efficient, reliable & clean future
• Two major advantages in smart grid:
1. Reduces Pollution
2. Demand electricity
• Microgrid - advanced, intellectual, localized, small scale grid
Motivation for Smart Grid technology
• According to Puducherry case study
• A. Environmental Ramifications in India due to Non-renewable Power
Plants
• B. Unplanned Black-Outs, Power Shortage & Power theft
Environmental Ramifications in India due
to Nonrenewable Power Plants
• 28% - Renewable energy power plant | 72% - Non Renewable …
• Thermal coal power plants - major deaths and health hazards of millions people every year
• Greenpeace environmental organization - greenhouse effect by 60% - neither any
regulation nor any preventive measures on pollution control
• Approx. 120,000 people kill due
to coal electricity generation
• booming industrialization -
public health crisis with 80-
120,000 premature deaths and
20 million new asthma
New Delhi Locals take anti-smog precautions
 Vinuta Gopal of Greenpeace said: “The
ongoing coal expansion create major
bad impacts on the environment and
stress out ecosystem which is irrational
& dangerous. Large coal mining has
assessed impacts of destroying India’s
forests, tribal communities &
endangered species. Low carbon contain
coal has unable to full-fill the energy
security. India has to take some
efficiency measures, wind, biomass and
solar”
World Nuclear Association review for Greenhouse Gas emission
Unplanned Black-Outs, Power Shortage &
Power theft
• Two severe power
blackouts affected most of
northern and
eastern India on 30 and 31
July 2012.
• The 30 July 2012 blackout
affected over 400 million
people - largest power
outage in history
• Estimated 32 gigawatts of
generating capacity was
taken offline.
RENEWABLE INTEGRATION WITH SMART
GRID :MICROGRID
• Macro grid has drawbacks - power loss, energy demand management and global greenhouse gases
emission
• Microgrid - advanced, intellectual, localized, small scale grid – Autonomously
• MicrogridConcept
Power Grid Corporation of India limited undertaking
Puducherry Smart Grid Pilot project
• five residential smart home consumers
• consist of distributed generation (DG) plants, power
converters, InformationTechnology network, and
Smart electrical network with intelligent Home
equipment
• renewable energy resources :- Solar-photovoltaic
system, micro wind, mini combined heat and power
biomass - distributed generation (DG) of electrical
power.
• 20kilowattsTri-hybrid | solar power – 10kw, wind
turbine – 5kw, biomass gasifier – 5kw
• Variable speed turbines – uncertain and intermittent
by nature
ENERGY DEMAND MANAGEMENT BY
SMART HOMETECHNOLOGY
• Smart Home - energy demand management by using smart meters & smart
appliances.
• Home area network makes the intelligent combination & control between
smart appliances with smart metering system.
• In the home area network (HAN) smart home appliances & smart meters
communicate intelligently to manage Peak electric demand.
A. Smart Home
• 2BHK smart home developed as pilot
project – energy demand
management study
• Communicating, decision making
according to peak load
• automatic communication with
electricity utility to manage peak
load demand of electricity
• At Puducherry pilot project, many
electric loads likeTV, refrigerator,
two CFL, washing machine, dish
washer, fans & thermal loads are
used in study of efficient electricity
management during peak hours
• auto-scheduling & time priority
based use of home appliances
• Smart sensor data analysis
B. Smart Meters
• Smart meter - digital meter - record consumption of electrical
power - advanced intelligent and communication system.
• It measures :
1. instantaneous power
2. amount of energy consumed
3. Power factor
4. reactive power
5. system voltage
6. frequency with high accuracy.
• Communication with smart home appliances and utility.
• Enables two way communication between smart home
appliances, smart meter and utility - advanced metering
infrastructure (AMI).
• AMI – supports demand side management
• DLMS/COSEM data transfer protocol
• User friendly - key pad or touch screen interface
C. Energy Demand Management of Smart
Home
• Stores data at specific interval and
transmit it to utility control center for
demand side management
• Components ofAMI - electronic
meter module, network system and
software
• Two type of information flow:
1. First from sensors and electrical
appliance to smart meters called
home area network (HAN)
2. between smart meters to utility
data center
Integration of smart grid with renewable energy
CONCLUSION
• Smart grid power system enables consumers to adjust their power
consumption according to peak load condition.
• Saving energy bill for household
• Consumers play greater role for shifting their peak hour load to non peak
hours.
• integration of smart grid with renewable energy resources contributes
clean-green energy to reduce hazardous impact on environment
Thus, Smart Grid
• integrate a variety of renewable resources for power generation
• with distributed generation, power transmission will be in both directions
• network-wide distributed energy generation
• Integrate demand response and demand side resources
• Increase overall generation by the connection of generators of all sizes and
technologies
• Reduce the environmental impact
• high levels of system reliability, quality and security of supply
