- 1. AGILE ADOPTION CHECKLIST In keeping with Agile’s inherent “get it done” philosophy, organizations should consider some key steps to get their own Agile initiative moving. Implimenting Agile is not as simple as introducting and applying a new methodology. It also requires a comprehensive culture change and mindset shift- a process that grows in difficulty with an organization’s size and scope. IMPORTANT NOTE: Adapt the work environment The typical Agile approach puts everyone in the same or at least contiguous space, including business, technical and operations people. Hire Agile as needed Deliver value early and often It sounds simple to do, but adopting Agile means changing the way HR operates—the way they resource, interview, assess skills etc. Change your vendor engagement thinking and process Agile’s iterative development process enables a project toget off the ground quickly. Prove the value of a project by developing something tangible. Find an Agile champion Ideally, you want one champion from business and one from technology. Get your champions from as high in your organization as possible. Do more than talk Talk is cheap. Effort should be focused on concrete deliverables—running code, tests, builds, and working proofs of concept. You need to find partners that will work with you as a team. You need to encourage cooperation, trust and transparency. Enable decision making Let the team—managers, business experts, developers, quality assurance— work together and make decisions. Clearly define your goals Agile transformations that lack clearly defined goals generally veer off-track. Decide what you want to accomplish. Adopt Agile technical practices Agile means having the tools, skill sets, technology and engineering practices to support the process. The proper adoption of Agile technical practices is a critical yet often missed step of Agile implementations. Coach existing staff while embedding expertise Coaching is necessary, but to fully enable Agile, you also need to embed seasoned Agile practitioners within the actual, practical execution process, consistently supporting and driving Agile practices.
