 Here’s your thoughts….

 What do you notice about most of the pictures?
 A huge network of computers (computers that are all
hooked together so they can share data)
 Includes e-mail, chat rooms and the World Wide Web.
 “Computers are connected to the Internet through
phone lines, cables, or wireless connections that
transmit digital information around the world.”
  (Eagleton &Dobler, 2007)
 The “Web” is part of the Internet
 Thinking back to the pictures you drew about the
Internet, which ones show a huge network of
 computers?
Internet
Internet
 Part of the Internet
 Contains all of the websites published by companies,
  universities, nonprofit organizations, and individuals.

 Can you believe everything you read on the web?
  Why/why not?

 Anyone can publish a website on the Web
 It is very important not to trust that every website
  contains reliable information.
 One way is through URLs and Domain Names

 URL: Uniform Resource Locator
 The website address or location of a website

 Domain Name: tells us the type of organization that
  published the information
 Domain Name Extension is the 3-letter part of the
address just before the first slash in the address (/)
 .edu = educational (www.iastate.edu)
 .gov = government (www.whitehouse.gov)
 .org = non-profit organization (www.pbskids.org)
 .mil = military (www.army.mil)
 .com = commercial and individual (www.disney.com)
 .net = commerical – alternate to .com
 .ia = state (www.waukee.k12.ia.us)
 .uk = country (www.bbc.co.uk)
 Click on mg-4th grade group folder in dock
 Double click on Documents
 Drag “Internet Vocabulary” to your desktop
 Copy and paste the correct term in front of the correct
 definition.
 Find and cut/paste the matching definition for:
   Internet
   Domain Name
   URL

 File  Save As
