Juan Algae Paste
Role of Microalgae in Aquaculture
• Primary producers
in aquatic
ecosystem
• Natural food for
early stages of fish
larvae (i.e.
milkfish, tilapia)
and early stages
of crustaceans (i.e.
shrimp and
mangrove crab)
CULTURE
CRASH
Difficulty & Challenges Faced by Hatcheries
•Sourcing out of green water from other hatcheries
•Procurement of algal inoculum to start another culture
•Procurement of imported commercially available
microalgal paste as feed
Immediate solutions in Hatcheries
when culture collapses?
Our Proposed Solution !
Come up with an alternative microalgae feed form
that :
 Ensure steady supply of microalgae as basic feed
for zooplankton (i.e rotifer) and as direct feed for
shrimp larvae.
 Can be used as an inoculum to start another batch
culture

Why Algae Paste?
 Convenient to use
 Readily available, locally produced
 Economical
 Live microalgae
 All natural, no preservative added
 Eco-friendly

Current Status
 UPV Algal Paste Protocol already established
utilizing the Algal concentrator (AlgaCon) which can
harvest 2-3 kgs m-3 paste culture volume
 Algal paste is working, acceptable and performs
similarly with the cultured live microalgae
 Algal paste can be an alternative feed to live culture
 AP can be used to start a new batch culture, which is
particularly important when difficulty in culture is
encountered
