LESSON 02: OPERATING SYSTEM
OBJECTIVES
• Discussed the meaning of operating system.
• Differentiate the types of operating system.
• Appreciate the de elopement of windows
operating system.
WHAT IS OPERATING SYSTEM?
An operating system has the direct access to the
computer hardware which depends on the user’s input on what
to process and more like a person that talk on what to do.
An operating system is the most important tool to have
in any gadgets. The gadgets such as laptop and cellphone will
run according to its operating system. It is a mediator between
the application program’s command and the hardware.
COMMON DESKTOP OPERATING
SYSTEMS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
• Windows is Microsoft's flagship operating system, the de
facto standard for home and business computers.
Introduced in 1985, the GUI-based OS has been
released in many versions since then.
• Mac OS is the operating system for Apple's Macintosh
line of PCs and workstations.
COMMON DESKTOP OPERATING
SYSTEMS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
• Unix is a multiuser operating system designed for
flexibility and adaptability. Originally developed in the
1970s, Unix was one of the first operating systems to be
written in the C language.
• Linux is a Unix-like operating system that was designed
to provide PC users a free or low-cost alternative. Linux
has a reputation as an efficient and fast-performing
system.

LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM HISTORY
• Linux is named after LINUS TORVALDS who created the Linux Kernel
in 1991. The kernel is the computer code that is central part of an
operating system.
• Linux is open source software. This means that anyone can use, copy,
study and change the software in any way they chose so long as the
source code is openly shared with others.
• Android is powered by Linux System.

• One of the top operating system.
• Developed by google.
• This operating system is based on the linux .It

• developed by microsoft for smartphone.
• Windows os provide colorful and user-friendly interface

• developed by rim in 1999
• RIM has developed this operating system smart phones.
Some of the smartphones operating on Blackberry OS

MODERN OPERATING SYSTEM
• GUI – Graphical User Interface lets you use your
mouse to click on icons, buttons, and menus, and
everything is clearly displayed on the screen using a
combination of graphics and text.
• Command Line Interface – before GUI. Which meant
the user had to type every single command to the
computer would only display text
