Jesus calls Simon Peter to be his disciple after Peter's brother Andrew introduces them. When they first meet, Jesus renames Simon as Peter, which means "rock". Jesus sees Peter's potential as a foundational leader in the new faith community. Peter witnesses Jesus's ministry and is amazed by his power, such as when Jesus instructs Peter to fish again and he catches a huge number. Jesus prophesies over Peter, telling him he will "fish for people". This early guidance from Jesus helps Peter understand God's purpose for his life and ministry.
