Lync Online vs. Lync On-Premise
• Online – No direct PSTN access from Microsoft Data Center
• Limited Features
• NO IM Archiving
• Only PC to PC voice and video (no Ent. Voice)
• Limited Connectivity / Interoperability
• No Interop with On-premise video systems
• No interop with On-Premise PBX
• Limited Federation for IM/P and A/V

• Lync Online USLs provide the flexibility to deploy the Lync functionality on premises and
includes rights to the equivalent on premises CAL. The rights to the CAL are non-perpetual
and expire when the underlying subscription rights expire.
• Pay attention to not confuse licensing model with deployment model – customer could
“buy” an Office 365 subscription but deploy on premise
• Often you can see SP and Partner offering an “Office 365” solution but in reality they are
implementing a dedicated Lync 2013 infrastructure with related costs, management
overhead and limits.

• Call phones from Lync
• Single number across PC and mobile phone
• Voice as part of a cloud-based unified communications
• At the 2014 Lync conference Microsoft
announced that “PSTN calling” feature will
remedy this…
• AT&T, KPN, Telenor, and Vodafone are the
four operators that will, at least initially,
provide the service
• No announcements up to now about
availability dates…

• No support for Standard Video Interoperabilty in Office 365
• Only dedicated O365 environment support VC registration (

• If recording PC powers off/goes into standby, creation of recording can
be delayed indefinitely.
• If one person records half of meeting
& another person 2nd half of meeting,
