He is an Information Systems major and is taking this course as a requirement for the Combined Degree Program. Role : Communications/Presenter Sean : Sean is in his last year as a student in the DePaul Masters of Instructional Technology Program. Role : Note Taker/Editor Mujtaba :Mujtaba is currently studying Business Information Technology. Role : Group Leader
What is MindMapping/Ideation? Definition : A diagram used to represent words, ideas, or tasks linked to a central key word or idea. Characteristics : 1. Graphical (Distinguish words or ideas with colors & symbols). 2. Hierarchical or tree branch. 3. Allows for creativity. 4. Associates words with visual representations. 5. Focuses on ONLY one word or idea versus. Does not connect multiple words or idea.
What is Ideation? Definition: Cognitive ability to generate and develop a root for expanding ideas and concepts. * First step in the group support systems pattern of interaction model.
Why use MindMaps? Allows anonymous collaboration. Allows for marriage of words and visuals. Allows for individual expression of creativity. Condenses material into a concise and memorable format. Team building or synergy creating activity. Enhances work moral.
Why Use Ideation? Idea Generation Organization Evaluation Prioritization Exploration Development Exposition
Disadvantages of Mindmapping/Ideation Poor framing or content. Facilitation of a brainstorm requires different skills than managing other meetings. Too few people are involved in ideation. Teams don’t believe idea will be acted upon. Poor communication during the brainstorming process. Mindmapping tools by themselves do not natively incorporate many web 2.0 technologies such as I.M or real-time voice. http://innovateonpurpose.blogspot.com/2006/08/whats-wrong-with-idea-generation.html

Tools: Nice to Haves   On-line real time.   User friendly.  Graphical tools 2 way audio and 2 way video.   Ability to upload/export attached images Access to communicative software; e-mail Gantt Charts Task management Software Operating System Compatible  Browser Compatible
Collaboration Methods Two subgroups: Each group reviewed tools together. Dimensions were used to help evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of the tool. Ranked each tool by features. Price was not a factor in initial evaluation of each tool.
General process for evaluating tools in this topic area Tool Listings (~40) There were a little over 40 listings! Wanted to get a good grasps on all tools Wanted to ignore price as a factor Divided into two-sub groups and each group reviewed 20 tools Proved to be exhausting! Group Tool Selection Requirements Use Dimensions as guiding reference List top three things about tool including price and website (price not being a factor) Rank by most distinguishable features (despite costs) Half should be free and others should have costs associated Half should be online ; other half ‘desktop’ Curriculum Storyboarding / Writing Project Management
The major differences between the tools (outside of price) Flexibility and extendibility (import/export) with Image/model representations Clipart, jpg/gifs, audio/video, html, flash Export Compatibility with other applications Word, powepoint, pdf, html, project, gannt charts, other MindMaps applications Mind Map Models Base Templates/frameworks for various tasks
Use Case #1 – Idea Generation Idea Generation Tom Byrd : Owner, The Mod Group, Inc.Age: 35 Goals: To develop rich mobile applications for business and entertainment Tom and his mobile application design team, the Mod Group, have been hired by Apple Computers to design a iphone app for baseball fans to use at games.  Ellen, the Apple marketing manager, wants the application to engage both the fans at the game and encourage use of the iPhone as a product selection. Baseball in the United States is the current sport and market Apple has in mind, but they are leaving complete concept and design control up to Tom and his group.  Ellen does not have a clue how or if an application likes this is worthwhile but wants to explore the idea anyway.  She needs to meet the fiscal year budget so gives Tom 1 month (June 1st) for a final design concept.Tom has a small team of graphic designers and coders.  Since this is a potential big contract and Tom only has one month, he needs to gather his team quickly.  In addition, they will need more hands on the project to solicit as many as ideas concepts and possible within first week with an ultimate goal of having a design prototype by June 1st.  Tom and his group need to compile as many ideas as possible for an iPhone design. He wants to use an online collaborative platform that will allow his team to be able to express their ideas freely, no matter how crazy they may be. As a usability design expert, he knows the design needs to be iterative and thus will need to revisit the idea platform with this group several times. Given the very quick turnaround, Tom needs to connect to his group regular and have real on time collaboration He plans on meeting his team 3 times a week for at least 2 hours in order to narrow down the idea designs to the top 5. In preparation for getting their one of his ideas accepted, Tom wants to wow the executives and have formidable project plan that illustrates how they plan to bring the idea to fruition. He plans to post their ideas and visuals representations of their model online There needs to be simultaneous idea generating interaction in order for this team to concurrently flush out idea 'trees'.  He also may need to hire new hands on the group along the way, so the tool needs to be user friendly with little learning curves for the new design contractors who may come on board.
Use Case # 2– Design Management/Analysis Design Management/Analysis Lisa Baxter : Field Services Director for a lnationwide Satelitle Cable Provider Age: 37 Goals: Identify why various suburban areas are receiving no or poor internet access Being able to locate prospective customers is crucial to the success of a satellite service provider. As field services director, Lisa knows the location of potential customers affects many decisions, including infrastructure investments, marketing efforts and determining whether service can be provided to a service opportunity. Ultimately Lisa wants to show a growth trend opportunities to her regional executives over a 5 year period. While they have a 2 mile radius of cable hubs over a 10 mile stretch, various customers are still complaining about poor and unreliable internet access. Her executives want to lay ground for additional piping to serve these areas, however Lisa fields the problem is the cable hubs are too far apart from each apart. In addition there is competing satellite services from a airport and the many cell phone towers nearby. To make her presentation appealing to both local and nationalship execs, she will use a analysis tool that willl show major landmarks in the area.
Use Case #2 Continued Using an online graphical design management and management tool, Lisa's can show her company can gain a greater return on your investment by increasing productivity and overcoming inherent limitations of geographic information systems. A graphic design tool can be used to initiate, design and close work requests that are designed with the tool. Furthermore, it is automatically generated, placed and connected facility objects that can become part of a viable and functional facility network. Also, the tool is a standardized facility design an easy integration of systems. An integration means not only integrating disparate IT systems, it also means combining together useful information to facilitate location analysis - information including demographic data, market analyses, service territories, regulatory boundaries and other key components with cable infrastructure locations to determine the best opportunities for growth and expansion of the customer base and for targeting marketing expenditures. Lisa needs the design management and analysis tool to provide real-time expertise to help cable service providers like hers to tailor a location analysis program for targeted customer growth in order to identify potential data resources to support the program.   This information needs to be accessible to various internal and external partners requiring cross platform compatibility between both OS and browsers versions.   Determining data availability, including address and plant data, clarifying data gaps requiring acquisition and managing the data are all critical components. The executives in turn can potentially target and partnership with areas business to increase their scope. They also have an opportunity to show how their physical proximity could make them an asset as a satelittle provider at the nearby airport.
