- #5: Libraries have found that users are willing to have quite long conversations by textFrontLineSMS - [http://www.frontlinesms.com/ FrontlineSMS] is free open source software that turns a laptop and a mobile phone into a central communications hub. Once installed, the program enables users to send and receive text messages with large groups of people through mobile phones. During the recent M-Libraries conference, Ken Banks (the founder of FrontLineSMS) showed some intriguing examples of how it has been used in the field. On a particular occasion, the software was used by the British army in Afghanistan to alert its staff about a major security incident, and as a result of this in time communication through FrontLineSMS, all the staff returned back to the based safely.
