Moving from Collecting to Organizing Argumentative Research Essay
Today we will … Discuss collecting strategies you used Move from collecting to organizing Define and identify refutation and  concession ideas Discuss organization choices and Organize ideas Discuss types of evidence/appeals/support strategies
Most of you chose Mind Mapping and T-Chart as your strategies? Why did you make that choice?
What did you learn by using the collecting exercise? What was Easy? Difficult? How did they help you?
Now that you have done the collecting exercises…  Is there anything you wish you would have done differently?
Recursive nature of writing— Do you need more research? How would this research be different? Do you need more Collecting? How would this be different?
Organization What is organization? Why is it important?
What does an outline consist of? Thesis Topic sentences What is a topic sentence? How many TSs will you need?
Outline Choices HANDOUT 2—go over them Pg 277 Rogerian Technique  281
In essay, include Refutation  and/or  Concession What does it mean?  Look at root of word? Refute   Defense refutes prosecution Disprove/contest/rebut/counter/ prove wrong Concede  I can’t convince group so I concede Grant/give in/admit
Refutation Tell other side and show how it is wrong (this is one way to argue your side)
Concession Tell other side and say you agree But… Your arguments/points are more valid EXAMPLE—BOARD—TCHART
Look at the opposing side Which arguments can you refute? Refute—Wrong!  Why? Which arguments can you concede to? Conceed—Agree…but EXAMPLE—SCREEN—TCHART 2
Look for connections between ideas Con—any groups? Learning/protection PRO—any groups? What they learn/other benefits/can learn on their own EXAMPLE ON BOARD #3/#4
Group refutation/concession with arguments EXAMPLE ON BOARD #5
Use those notes to begin outline HANDOUT  6  AND  7
Ways to support Thesis? Give examples Present comparison and contrast Show a cause and effect Argue by definition
Argument Strategies Appeal to Logic—reader’s ability to reason and recognize good sense solid evidence Appeal to Emotion—persuade people by playing on their feelings Do not mislead; distract; scare
Types of Evidence Personal Experience Experience or Testimony of others whose opinions are pertinent Factual information from research Statistics from current, reliable sources Hypothetical examples Testimony from authorities or experts Charts, graphs, or diagrams
Moving from Collecting to Organizing Label refute or concede. Notes—refute—Wrong! Why? (in own words). Group ideas in CON—label. Group ideas in PRO—label. Group REFUTATIONS  with arguments. Decide—use a CONCESSION? Decide—omit ideas? Decide—which outline format? Write outline.
