Narrative Structure
My story, which I have chosen for my booklet is a linear narrative. As this type of
structure goes from the beginning to the end also by having in between these
sections are what happens through out the story of events that unravel. As my
story follows this type of based on narrative structure as it has good simple
opening to and plus which it has an ending to it as well. All the events go through
one to another. I have chosen this type of linear structure is because I thought
that it was the best way to explain my story. Also, on the other hand that I choose
this kind of linear narrative structure is because that it is one of the most popular
ways of telling a story. Plus, it is the easiest way to tell a story to child, which
while understand what is happening through out the story. For an example of
this narrative structure is the TV program from BBC station that has broadcasted
a programme structured to be linear is called Taboo. It is not a non-linear. As a
non-linear is where they don’t make the story go in a straight line. As they may
have flash backs or flash forwards. This will be to seem as a jump in time. For an
example of these kinds of stories is Pulp Fiction.
I would say that my story is not an open narrative structure. As this type of
structure is where the ending doesn’t reach to a conclusion. For an example of
this type of serious would be like in a programme called Eastenders. As they
always leave on cliffhanger or to be waited on from the next series, this has not
been resulted to a conclusion. But. However, I have used a closed narrative
structure. This type of structure, which I have enhanced within my work, is by
making it reaching to a conclusion. As I have done this by making Goldilocks the
main character run back home. As this makes it results to a conclusion. As she’s
going home makes it clear to where she going and also gives the audience a clear
a point of view of where she is going. This has a good clear understanding of
when there is a conclusion, which you can clearly see.
Within my story I would say that my own story has a single strand narrative
structure. My book has this single strand through out my story, as the single
strand means that it only has one storyline. As keeping this storyline means that
this will keep it nice a simple and easier to understand for the age group that
which I am trying to give it to. So for my own story I have made it simple to
understand by having it on a single strand. I have created this within my work is
by making one straight storyline which I have the storyline to be is goldilocks
gets lost and then she finds a igloo house all on its own. So as she goes inside she
finds food and somewhere to rest when she gets and then screams back home
when penguins come back home. However if there were multiple stories tied
into one book then this will get highly confusing. Also the children would also get
confused and struggle of what’s happening from one story to the other. So this
makes it simpler to use a single strand of just using one book storyline instead of
using a multi strand. As this multi strand uses multiple storylines that all
different compared to each other. So, these styles can happen either TV show or
books or films. For the example for this multi strand is the film called ‘Love
Actually’. This film which I have chosen is has got a quite a mixture of various
stories on the topic of love but been placed with different meanings. As they have
jumbled together it one whole story. This type of storyline has kept the same
kind of genre going through out this film but also going through from the
different couples of their love lives.
My story would be an Anti-realist storyline. I have said this because you would
never talk to a penguin, as a penguin cannot speak, plus you can’t live in
Antarctica. As Antarctica is way to cold live there anyway. So for an example of
this is when the penguins are talking to each other of what has happened in their
house as someone has eaten their food and sat in there seats. As penguin
wouldn’t have their own house as they would usually sleep outside. So this
would make all of these things, which I have said to be seen as anti-realist. As
anti-realist is when it involves places or characters that wouldn’t happen in real
life that would be impossible to believe. However, on the hand a realist is where
they believe that events and character’s are real and could actually to happen to
someone. For an example of this is, is both in the book and film called ‘ The
Help’. All these main events in this books and the film.
Components
Firstly from the narrative structure components, is the opening. My book has got
an opening by saying of where Goldilocks lives and whom she lives there with,
like her mum and her dog. As this tells a bit about her and also gets the insight of
what she is like. As this firstly this is shown to be as mist chiefs.
Secondly, Conflict of narrative structure components, Goldilocks makes conflict
resulting into this story. Some of the conflict that which she makes is firstly, eats
the three penguins foods, sits in their chairs and lastly goes into the three beds to
sleep in them. As from this she is messing up the house from eating their food.
Also there is the conflict of Goldilocks she breaks into the house of the penguin’s
house. As the conflict means that there is the thing drives the story forward, the
detail of the problems that occur.
Thirdly, Resolution of narrative structure components, the resolution of this
story is that she runs back home. As her mother told her that she should listen to
her mother had said to her before she left the house. As the resolution means
what happens at the end of the story like is there a resolution from the conflict.
Fourthly, Enigma of narrative structure components, the enigma is when there is
puzzle within your story. As by appealing this it will intrigue the viewer into the
story. My story doesn’t consist any of these narrative structure components.
Fifthly, Climax of narrative structure components, a climax is in the story there is
a turning point which makes the changes within the characters fate become bad
or good depending on the situation. However I would say that my story has got a
bit of climax enhanced in book. Is because in my story when the main character
Goldilocks goes to sleep in one of the penguins beds. When she wakes up from
the penguins are growling at her as this changes the fate of the character. Also
this shows to be the highest point for the main character point of view. To get out
of this situation.
Sixthly, Manipulation of time and space of narrative structure components, my
story doesn’t consist any of this components such for this component to jump
forward or even backwards either in time or stretching out time or maybe
condensing it.
