Scenario
You are employed as a sales engineer of a company which is a re-seller of automation and industrial control
products such as PLCs, sensors, pushbuttons,
AC drives/motors, enclosures, operator interfaces, and much more. You are asked demonstrate your
knowledge and skills with PLC programming and design.
Task 1:
a) You should have completed all the exercises in the lab using PLC trainer kit during your lab.
For each lab, you should
- List the input and output devices
- Produce a wiring diagram to the PLC and its power circuit
- Produce a table of tags, input and output addresses
- Produce a PLC program rather than the one given if possible
- Show your debugging and testing processes
List of exercises:
1. Latches
2. Burglar Alarm (OR-GATE)
3. Microwave Oven (AND-GATE)
4. Fuel Tank (NAND-GATE)
5. Fuel Tank (NOR-GATE)
6. ASTRO Sensors (XOR-GATE)
7. ASTRO Sensors (XNOR-GATE)
8. Emergency Stop (NOT-GATE)
9. Traffic + Walk Light
10. Conveyor Belt
11. Microwave Oven Timer
12. Washing Machine
13. Mixer
14. Room Capacity Alarm

15. Forward/Reverse Motor Control
16. Elevator
(Note: Please refer to the attached Lab sheets for more information)
b) While doing your lab exercises you have used testing and debugging techniques. Discuss
methods of testing and debugging your programmes and explain the usefulness of these
methods.
Task 2. For the simulated system on FX Trainer assigned (please refer to the list),
1. List all the input and output devices and its brief function
2. Describe the operation of the system
3. Produce a list of tags and labels for all the inputs and outputs.
2. Produce a flow chart/state diagram style program.
3. Produce a truth table showing only the conditions that turn the motors on.
5. Produce a circuit diagram for the hardwired control circuit.
6. Produce a ladder logic diagram for the control circuit. Transfer it to the FX Trainer
Simulator test the programme.
9. Demonstrate the system working.
Task 3. For saving cost, you are asked to control the system in Task 2 using a PIC or other
microcontroller. Describe what you would change and compare the two systems in term of cost,
design complexity and operation
Task 4. Describe the two PLC simulation software you have used and compare their operation and
functionality, advantages and limitations
