The period of first generation was
from 1946-1959. The computers of
first generation used vacuum tubes as
the basic components for memory and
circuitry for CPU (Central Processing
Unit).
These tubes, like
electric bulbs, produced
a lot of heat and the
installations used to
fuse frequently.
The second generation computers
were used during 1957-1963. They
are also known as transistor
computers.
The period of third generation was from 1965-
1971. The computers of third generation used
Integrated Circuits (ICs) in place of transistors. A
single IC has many transistors, resistors, and
capacitors along with the associated circuitry.
Fourth Generation of computers
was between 1971 – 1980. These
computers used the VLSI
technology or the Very Large
Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuits
technology. Therefore they were
also known as the
microprocessors. Intel was the
first company to develop a
microprocessor.
Microprocessors
Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI)
The computers of fifth-generation
use AI (artificial intelligence)
technology that includes:
Development of expert systems,
Game Playing, Robotics, Natural
language understanding, and
Neural Networks.

MIL SUBJECT
• The Prehistoric Age :
(1500 BC – 1500 AD)
- They use of the
first stone tools
• Industrial Age :
(1700s-1930s)
-Machines such as
the power loom and
the steam engine
• The Electronic Age:
(1930s – 1980s)
-People harnessed the
power of transistor that
led to the transistor
communication became
more efficient.
• DIGITAL AGE (1900s-2000s)
-Economy based on
information computerization
Question?
As a new generation are
you familiar with the
components of the
Computer System today?
Define…
What is Computer?
A computer is a device that accepts
information and manipulates it for some
result based on a program, software, or
sequence of instructions on how the data is to
be processed.
Computer along with additional
hardware and software together is
called a computer system.
A computer system is a set of
integrated devices that input,
output, process, and store data and
information.
Computer System primarily comprises
of the following:
CPU/Processor
1. Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Interprets, processes
and executes
instructions, most often
from the hardware and
software programs
running on the device.
The brain of your
computer
Hard Disk Drive Random Access Memory
Temporary Memory. It's
where the data is stored that
your computer processor
needs to run your
applications and open your
files.
Permanent Memory.
stores all of your digital
content. documents,
pictures, music, videos,
programs, application
preferences, and
operating system
2. Memory
3. Input/output Devices
4. Storage Devices
Essential functions of the
Computer System.
Instructional Materials will
be given for actual
identification of computer
system components.
1. Motherboard
A motherboard
is the main
printed circuit
board (PCB) in
a computer.
2. Processor Socket –
Hold the CPU. It's
used for the CPU to
ensure correct circuit
chip insertion.
3. POWER SUPPLY (ATX-style connector)
- It connects a power
supply to an ATX-style
motherboard.
ATX mean Advanced Technology Extended
How many pins does an ATX power
connector have?
It has 24 pins, arranged in two rows of 12.
Some older motherboards may have a 20-
pin connector instead, in which case you
can use an adapter or a PSU that has a
20+4-pin connector that can split into two
parts.
-With the introduction of ATX-2, this cable is now
a 24-pin cable and no longer a 20-pin cable.

4. Memory Slot – It is used to hold memory (RAM)
5. IDE – (Integrated Drive
Electronics) is an electronic
interface standard that defines the
connection between a bus on a
computer's motherboard and the
computer's disk storage devices.
6. North Bridge – manages
communication between
Central Processing Unit
(CPU) and parts of
motherboard.
7. South Bridge – It controls
component like PCI, USB,
SATA and other input and
output of the system.
8. PCI – (Peripheral Component
Interconnect) is the most
common way to attach add-on
controller cards and other
devices to a computer
motherboard.
9. AGP – Accelerated
Graphics Port (AGP) is a
parallel expansion card
standard, designed for
attaching a video card to
a computer system.
10. BIOS – (Basic Input/
Output System) is the
program a computer's
microprocessor uses to
start the computer system
after it is powered on.
11. Back Panel- is the
portion of the motherboard
that lets you connect
external devices, such as
your monitor, speakers,
keyboard, and mouse.
Question?
1.What is CPU Stand for and its function?
2. What is the purpose of the Power
Supply?
3. It is your temporary memory?
4. It is used to hold your temporary
memory?
5. What is AGP stand for and its function?

Components of the Motherboard
• CPU Socket
• IDE
• AGP
• PCI
• North and South Bridge
• RAM Slot
• 20/24 ATX slot

Direction: Write T if the statement is True or Write F if the
statement is false.
1.CPU is responsible for calculating images in a computer,
which can then be displayed on a monitor.
2.IDE means Integrated Drive Electronics.
3.Hard Disk Drive is your temporary memory?
4.Power supply is the outer shell of a computer?
5.Memory Slots Holds Processor?
