I think he has created another solution Mr. David Chandler & Mr. Dasharha Would like to welcome you to Design and Technology (creating solutions)
WHAT IS DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY? Any suggestions?
Can anyone suggest if there are any similarities between the occupation of a Doctor and a Bomb - Disposal Expert?
Common to both of their occupations is problem solving
How do they solve their problems? Guessing
Do they solve their problems by concentrating on other things ?
Or even by trial and error
Both the Doctor and Bomb Disposal Expert are APPLYING their knowledge, skills and understanding in a methodically way to solve their problem .
Both are trained to use a set sequence of actions to solve their problems which is: What is the problem Investigate the problem Formulate and select a plan Execute the plan Evaluate the action taken, does the problem still exist? Who can now identify the stages in the Doctor Patient interaction ?
We call this methodical sequence of actions the Design Process
identifying or clarifying a need or opportunity analysing, researching and specifying requirements generating ideas and solutions developing the chosen solution realising the chosen solution testing and evaluating the chosen solution In nearly everything we do we use the design process
What is one of the disadvantages of the design process being in a linear form?
How do these kettles boil water? Which one would you prefer to use and why?
Kettle boiling on a open flame is a linear process Input Process Output Why are users moving away from this design of kettle?
This electric kettle is a form of robot it has a programmable sequence Input Process Output Feedback Its sensors keep monitoring and evaluating the stages in the sequence so instead of a linear form it is a circular form, therefore it turns itself off when the water has boiled. It is a circular sequence of stages. Can anyone explain?
The design process is therefore developed from being a linear form into a circular form hence it is called the design cycle. This design cycle forms the heart of Design & Technology. It also is at the heart of Human Behaviour a necessary life skill.
identifying or clarifying a need or opportunity analysing, researching and specifying requirements generating ideas and solutions developing the chosen solution realising the chosen solution testing and evaluating the chosen solution Should be a circular or Design Cycle, with interaction between stages, evaluation, monitoring of events, alternative being constantly suggested and up dated In nearly everything we do we use the design process /cycle
Design Process/ cycle The six stages in the IB design cycle model . identifying or clarifying a need or opportunity analysing, researching and specifying requirements generating ideas and solutions developing the chosen solution realising the chosen solution testing and evaluating the chosen solution. Identifying needs Researching Generating ideas Developing solutions Realising solution Evaluating
Can you think of examples of how you have used or have seen other people use the design cycle. For example: Stages in the Design Cycle Cleaner Driver Holiday ? Identifying or clarifying a need or opportunity Analysing, researching and specifying requirements Generating ideas and solutions Developing the chosen solution Realising the chosen solution Testing and evaluating the chosen solution
Being able to use effectively the design cycle is an important life skill With the person sitting next to you illustrate how the design cycle is used by one of the following: An Airline pilot, when he finds that one engine has failed When buying a car, Family deciding on where to go on holiday . Decorating your bedroom. A person who wishes to resolve a dispute between themselves and another. Explain how the ladies washing clothes in the picture are using the design cycle Or how the washing machine programs are based on many design cycles. Or some other scenario .
Since man evolved and has been faced with problems to solve he has used the design cycle to assist him to find suitable solutions You are all problem solvers through out the day and you all use the design cycle, consciously or subconsciously .
The Design Cycle is not only a methodological process used during human interaction but it is also used to create realistic products that solve problems
. Do you know these people? By using the design cycle they have all changed the world in which we live
These products are all solutions to identified problems created by people using the design cycle from problem to solution BUT are they good designs?
What is a well designed product ? Good design is functional Good design makes a product useful Good design is aesthetically pleasing A good design is intuitive A good design makes good business A good design is honest A good design is long-lasting A good design is user-oriented A good design is unobtrusive A good design is thorough – down to the last detail

Larger problems can be broken down into smaller one and solved by using the design sequence. Where shall we store the oil?
We need concrete and lots of it? How much? How quick? This is too slow. Give me a solution.
That’s better, What stage of the design sequence, produced a concrete pump on site?
Do you know where the oil storage tank is? By using the design sequence this was selected as the chosen site. Look at the size of the man at the end, the TANK is BIG
Even if designers follow the design sequence in my opinion they don’t always get it correct . Are these good design?
What are these products designed to do ?
How functional are these designs?
Which country would this be appropriate in?
Who would use these product? Would they be a market for such products?
What do you think of these designs?
Has anyone seen this bright idea?
Which is my traffic lights? Why is this a poor design for an electric hob? Confusing car dash board display
So what ‘s the problem now? My brief was to build a road so I did.
Good or bad designs or ideas for the future? Golf club testing rig Package holiday Heath Robinson

HEATH ROBINSON Gadgets 1940’s inventions Can you follow his thinking? His design for a pancake –making machine
If design is the process where a solution to a problem is formulated what is technology? It is the current knowledge and skills that are available to solve the identified problem. Opposite the problem is the same, Food Warmth, shelter . Because of the available technology the solutions are different.
Advancements in technology has aided communication When my Mother was your age which of the above did she use?
Why does Hamilton's car travels the fastest ? (because of advances in technology)
Leonardo Di-Vinci designs waiting for the appropriate technology to become reality
Brief after washing clothes and drying them they are usually creased and shabby looking how has technology helped ?

The design brief is still the same Shelter, warmth security WHY are the solutions different
Because of DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY we can and must create solution, but are they correct solutions?
Cavemen were self sufficient and if they required anything they had to participate in every stage of the design cycle. Modern “man” with disposable incomes employs people to assist them in following the design sequence to solve an identified problem Where in the Design sequence would you employ a: Architects, Accountants, Builders, Quantity Surveyors. Structural Engineers Market Researcher Model maker Environmentalist Aeronautics Engineer Geologists All of these profession use the design cycle in their work Identifying needs Researching Generating ideas Developing solutions Realising solution Evaluating
Design & technology is a holistic subject drawing upon and applying knowledge and skills from all subjects areas within the school curriculum What contributions do the subjects on the curriculum play in helping you and adults understand and employ the design cycle in solving problems? English, Mathematics Science Foreign languages History Geography ICT Economics Art and Design Music Identifying needs Researching Generating ideas Developing solutions Realising solution Evaluating
Design Technology Two very important words Design; is a methodical sequence we use to formulate a realistic solution Technology ; the knowledge, skills and understanding available in order to solve that problem Which one do I think is the most important one of the two .? Any ideas?
Design; is a methodical sequence we use to formulate a realistic solution Why most important? For the individual = Actions based on logical , rational decisions . Gives people independence , not just knowledge based learning but application of knowledge . For the current society / world = Job for life Future Societies /world = How do we prepare ?

So if Design & Technology is applying ones Knowledge, Skills and Understanding of the world around us to solve problems. My generation have maintained and created this. How will YOUR generation use their Knowledge Skills and Understanding of YOUR world to solve future problems
You may one day use DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY to create a solutions that changes the world in which we live. My world and more and more YOUR WORLD wants creative, motivated people to solve current and future world problems. YOU LOOK BUT DO YOU SEE?
Current Design & Technology (creating solutions ) has got us here where will your generation take US ?   Being selfish I would like to live longer with peace of mind and in comfort. What would you like? IT’S DOWN TO YOUR GENERATION. Perhaps this is next?
This morning we discovered the meanings of the words Design and Technology Now we are going to highlight what qualities you need to acquire and develop to be an excellent Design & Technologist. The people who were responsible for these gaffs need more education on the Design Cycle

Sorry Sir but according to the plans it had to go there.
To be good at Design and Technology you need to develop and acquire knowledge, skills, and attributes and then apply them. This afternoon we will concentrate on just three; 1 Look but do you see How what why when where 2.Team work / learning a new skill 3. Enhance hand eye co-ordination, fabricate a product and then develop an idea.
Develop the curiosity and an enquiring mind to look, see and understand the world around you. What, is it? What does it do? Why is it there? When was it put there? How does it do it? To be good at Design and Technology need to: You
Thank you for listening. Design and Technologists. For the rest of the day count how many times you use your design and technology skills and knowledge in your every day activities.
You will be given the opportunity today to visit part of the School that will intrigue you. Before the School was built this area was fields, but by using Design & Technology Baliawas is being created before your very on eyes On your trip don’t just LOOK BUT SEE ASK : What is it? What does it do? How does it do it Why is it there? How was it made?
1 Learn new skills 2 Learn to be part of a team To be good at Design and Technology need to: YOU
Today you will be given the opportunity to work as a team As individuals we can achieve a lot but as a group of people we can achieve much more. In teams you will be set various challenges that you need to accomplish. Ski walking Maze challenge Trolley pull Design and play a simple musical instrument Plus learn; to walk on stilts, Operate a model crane.
