Worship that
Pleases God

God wants
all
of you

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart,
and with all your soul, and with all your mind,
and with all your strength.” Mk. 12:30
God wants all of you, He doesn’t want a part of
your life. He asks for all your heart, all your
soul, all your mind, and all your strength.


1. God is pleased when our
worship is accurate
“I like to think of God as...”. is heresy -
true worship is based on what the bible
reveals about God
“True worshipers will worship the
Father in spirit and truth, for they
are the kind of worshipers the
Father seeks.”
Jn. 4:23


worship is authentic
“Worship in spirit” isn’t referring to the
Holy Spirit but to your spirit - God
designed your spirit to be in communion,
worshipping him.
God is looking for worship as an
overﬂow of our heart.
Spirit and truth means worship will be
authentic and accurate.


“Man looks at the outward
appearance, but the Lord looks at
the heart.”
I Sam. 16:7b
Songs which make us emotional are not
necessarily good as they take the focus
from God and put it on us.
The Bible tells of many different ways we
can praise and worship God.


Gary Thomas suggests
that many Christians
are stuck in a rut -
they worship God in
ways other people tell
them to. God made us
all differently - we
don’t have to all
worship in the same
way.


Thomas suggests 9 ways people
draw near to worship God:
Naturalists - outdoors
Sensates - sights, sounds etc.
Traditionalists - ritual,
symbols
Ascetics - solitude, simplicity
[a person who practices self-
discipline and abstention]


Activists - working to
improve things, justice
Caregivers - loving and
caring for people
Enthusiasts - celebration
Contemplatives -
through adoration
Intellectuals - with their
minds


Real worship happens when your spirit
responds to God not some musical tone.
The best style of worship is the one that
most authentically represents your love for
God, based on the background and
personality God gave you.
“That’s the kind of people the Father
is out looking for: those who are
simply and honestly themselves
before Him in their worship.” Jn. 4:23


worship is thoughtful

We must engage our minds. Jesus’
command to “Love God with all your
mind’ is repeat four times in the New
Testament.
“If worship is mindless it is meaningless”


But when you pray, go into your room,
close the door and pray to your Father,
who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees
what is done in secret, will reward you.
And when you pray, do not keep on
babbling like pagans, for they think they
will be heard because of their many words.
Do not be like them, for your Father
knows what you need before you ask him.
Matt 6:6-8


Use different words - think of
different words to use instead of
praise
Be speciﬁc in your words
Meditate on the Names of God -
how many can you think of?


worship is practical

“Offer your bodies as living sacriﬁces,
holy and pleasing to God – this is your
spiritual act of worship.” Rom. 12:1
You can’t do anything without your body
on this planet. The problem with a living
sacriﬁce however is that it can crawl off
the altar and we often do.


As God has given the supreme sacriﬁce in
the life and death of Jesus - What sort of
sacriﬁce is God looking for us to give
today?

Thanksgiving, prayer, praise, service,
money, time, energy...


today?
Thanksgiving, prayer, praise, service,
money, time, energy...
To really worship God costs us - it is not
always convenient or comfortable.


David knew the cost of worship and said,
“I will not offer to the Lord my
God sacriﬁces that have cost me
nothing.”
2 Sam. 24:24


Matt Redman wrote a song, “Heart of
Worship”, after his pastor banned singing
in their services for a while.
What is your heart of worship.


Point to Ponder:
God wants all of me.

Question to consider:
Which is more pleasing to God right
now – my public worship or my private
worship? What will I do about this?
