Why we need a Script?
• To include all the information in a logical order
• To introduce and conclude a programme
creatively
• To link between sections in a programme
• To disseminate information that is not available
in recorded form, or which can
• To give an editorial direction to the programme
• Maintaining the flow of information
• To introduce mood or feeling into a programme
• To tell a complete story as in a feature
programme
• Finally, it is because we can't get people to say
what we want them to say
• It is the framework for the programme17 September 2017 © ARMT, 2017 [CC-BY-SA]:: http://armt.in 9

Scripting 4 radio: S : Silence
• A script for radio starts with silence..
• Stop---Close your eyes----Take a deep
breath--Shut out the world around you– Try
to visualise…… That is radio
• The script should be written in simple,
short sentences
• Try to use everyday language and terms
• It should not contain any technical
jargons and complicated concepts that
could confuse and distract the listeners.

Scripting 4 radio: R : Radio 4 listeners
• Remember it is the medium of sound
sound and sound only
• Remember the characteristics of radio
that we discussed at the beginning.
• A script should maintain the nature of
the radio
• The script should offer the audience
introductions to the audio

Scripting 4 radio: I : Importance of words
• Simplicity is the beauty of radio
• Radio is a very soft medium, hence the
selection of the words for the radio
should also be very soft and simple.
• The script is what makes sense of the
information
• It brings together the most important
elements, and helps your audience
understand the significance of the points

Scripting 4 radio: P : Pacing and picture
• The ear is not a very intelligent organ. It
processes information relatively slowly
• Words are signs that stand for something else.
• To make it more effective pacing is very
important in the script.
• Words on radio are spoken. This makes them
different to words printed on a page because
extra layers of meaning can be added.
• The script should be prepared in a way that the
listener can visualize the entire programme.

• Time that passes can never return, nor can
it be compensated for, time is irretrievable.
• Time is the most precious thing that man
possesses.

• It runs on time. The script is made
considering the time factor, short or long..

Scripting 4 radio: I : Interactive
• A radio script should be interactive.
• Radio speaks to individual and at the
same time radio speaks to many
• Don’t try to attract listeners by
including your own emotions; include
others
• Those who listen to your radio
package will make their own
decisions based on the interactions
