- 12. Polysem : occurs where a word has two or more related meanings. Apolyseme is a word or phrase with multiple meanings. Adjective:polysemous or polysemic. In contrast, a one-to-one match between a word and a meaning is called monosemy. "Monosemy is probably most clearly found in specialized vocabulary dealing with technical topics" 5/3/2014 12
- 13. POLYSEMY: is a linguistic term. POLY + SEMY= MANY + SENSES polysemy (noun) 1. linguistics. The existence of more than one meaning for a single word, such as table. There are many polysemous (having many senses) in the English Language. Let's take the simple word, 1. 'FIX'. It has many meanings such as 1.attach, 2.Arrange 3.Get ready (food or drinks) 4.repair 5. punish, 6.set right (the hair) 2.Accept ( take willingly, receive as suitable, agree, admit (responsibility), to believe that something is true etc etc 5/3/2014 13
