  • 22. Get ready for the shift from traditional video conferencing islands to video enabled unified collaboration!    Focusing on managing your network, this session offers critical suggestions for deployment, management and provisioning to provide the highest levels of scale, reliability and performance across the continuum from desktop, group systems and immersive telepresence.

Editor's Notes

  • #5: Historical Video Conferencing: Homogeneous, room-based …. proprietary islands Connected via proprietary management systems Duplicate databases and directories Requiring video ‘overlay’ or dedicated network Limited scale and reach into organization Heavy care & feeding needed Networks were built ‘outside-in’ – start with EP’s, move to multipoint, requiring management solutions… larger in scale, but no deeper in reach or integration Still just video islands calling video islands
  • #6: Video Enabled UC -Inside out approach – the ‘shift’ in thinking starting with the core communication network -Video integrated into existing call control and business applications -The ‘Collaboration Core’ is created – not just talking head rooms calling talking head rooms -Collaboration core requires direct integration with mission critical applications and communication engines – Presence, IM, Directory and extending to ‘visual’: Provisioning, Bridging, Recording Streaming, Reporting -Reach of endpoints rapidly expands beyond talking head rooms to: desktop, mobile and immersive telepresence
  • #7: What are the attributes of VC2? How will VC2 differ from traditional video conferencing? The interfaces people use will no longer be intimidating; they’ll be intuitive. Their experiences won’t be characterized by delay and jittery images. They’ll be instantaneous and in high definition. In the traditional world, people conversed in conference rooms; in the VC2 world, visual communication will take place anywhere, at anytime. An intermediary is required to assist users in the traditional model; users in the VC2 world will serve themselves. Traditional videoconferencing is telecom oriented; VC2 is IT-friendly. And traditional videoconferencing runs on a standalone, overlay network; VC2 runs on a converged, IP infrastructure However, none of this comes auto-magically…. The solution must be architected (NOT ADAPTED) to deliver: -Scale -Consistent Mgmt -Corporate Directory Support An open, standards-based solution is a must!
  • #8: Beginning with it’s Collaboration Core, Polycom provides a highly scalable and standards-based solutions architecture throughout the enterprise to provide for (slide builds): Robust communications management and conferencing platforms which directly integrate with the UC ecosystem for fully interoperable call control To a complete portfolio of High Definition (HD) voice, video, and telepresence collaboration solutions that provide an easy to use and best-in-class user experience throughout the enterprise … Not only at HQ, Regional Offices, and small regional offices, but also to teleworkers, partners/customers, and even across legacy networks in the field Go to next slide …..
  • #13: Currently on Site Topology you can view the video network, site details (bandwidth, site name, country code, etc.), and you can drag and move it around to have it look visually the way you want. No “world view” and no ability to drill down into a site. New CMA puts the topology on top of a world map so operator can visually see each continent and how their network is set up geographically. Additionally, from this view, they can drill down into the sites and get more information about what’s happening in each location.
  • #14: Let’s take the example where a customer has deployed Polycom endpoints and has infrastructure at their headquarters or NOC including at least CMA and RMX, if not additionally DMA, VMC or RSS recording and streaming. They are a Microsoft Exchange customer – using MS Outlook and Sharepoint in their organization. They are looking to expand the video usage in their company and have the following needs or concerns: Easily adding video to any meeting – when trying to schedule a meeting in outlook, they need an easy way to add video to that meeting without having ot know IP addresses of conference rooms or individuals Quickly connect to video meeting from Outlook meeting “pop up” – if I have desktop video conferencing, I would like a link that takes me right to the video meeting (similar to LiveMeeting links in an Outlook invite) from the invite I get for the meeting. Simply record desired meetings – without having to know the IP address of the recording server and without having to go through the menu of the recording server – I just want to choose “record” Efficiently access recorded content – After recording, I need an easy way to find and distribute or post the recorded content – I don’t have time to look for it in a menu of other recordings that have happened that day. Extending access to connect during video meeting without having to refer to computer, PDA – oftentimes I need to quickly add another person or access specific content during a meeting – I’d like to be able to do that within the video meeting – not have to figure out a way to do it separately.
  • #15: With VC2 Wave 2, calendaring is the key way people will create meetings with video By installing a simple, one-time plug in at the desktop – the netowrk administrator gives all users access to add video to a meeting, or create a video meeting. An icon will show up in the Outlook scheduler window Directly schedule all needed resources Conference details embedded in each invite VMR’s assigned to each meeting randomly which lessens the risk of overlapping meetings or double-scheduling Simply click “join the meeting” and CMAD or MOC will place the call – which ever video client is associated with your profile. You could also have an HDX associated with your profile. If you do, the HDX will ask you if you’d like to join the meeting at the time of the meeting
  • #16: These are some possible on-screen options for the upcoming HDX interface for meeting rooms. We’ve worked hard to make 1 option for a home screen (currently we have 2) and included on that home screen all the most likely things a user would need to do. When Calendar is pressed, the room’s Outlook calendar will be displayed, showing the meetings scheduled in that room. The meetings can be marked as Private (like the one shown below) where no information about that meeting is available in Outlook – or Public – where the attendees, agenda, etc. are available for participants as they walk into the room. You can join the meeting by pressing the green call button in the invite.
  • #19: Usage Executive Communication Workgroup collaboration Research and development Customer One of the world’s two leading aircraft manufacturers. The company employs 56,000 people and develops, produces and supports world-leading airliners Solution Polycom VSX 7000, 8000, MGC bridges Project Summary Worldwide video communications network that connects Airbus sites throughout Europe, the United States, Japan and China. 200+ Polycom systems enable more than 1500 hours/month of video collaboration
  • #20: Manufacturing Industry Case Example Leading Global Supplier of Premier Specialty Construction Chemicals and Materials Additional case talking points of interest on WR Grace 6000 employees in 40 countries Other areas of use: R&D - collaborate and build consensus (resulting in decreased development time) HR – interview process Sales – international customer relations and negotiations Service/Support – remotely diagnose problems Virtual town hall meetings connect 2000 employees (save $1M annually) Video reduces meeting times and enables faster decision making by 50% (IDC Report, April 2007)
