INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this project is to help users of electric power to
understand harmonic distortion and its sources, to recognize if it is present
and to take steps to reduce it or minimize its effects. In this project,
harmonics in industrial power system and various harmonic mitigation
techniques for industrial power supply systems are firstly described. Then,
the harmonic problem in industrial power supply system detailed analysis
of harmonic filter simulated by Matlab/Simulink.
HARMONIC SOURCES AND ITS EFFECTS
Harmonics are sinusoidal voltages or currents having frequencies that
are integer multiples of the frequency at which the supply system is
designed to operate.
CAUSES
 Non linear loads
 Industrial loads
EFFECTS
 Overheating of conductors and transformer
 Decrease in efficiency
 Increase in losses
HARMONIC FILTERING TECHNIQUES
Harmonic filters can be mainly classified into two:
Passive filtering techniques
Active filtering techniques
1) Active Filtering Techniques
The more sophisticated active filtering concepts operate in a wide
frequency range, adjusting their operation to the resultant harmonic
spectrum.
2)Passive Filtering Technique
One of the most common methods for control of harmonic distortion in
industry is the use of passive filtering techniques that make use of single-
tuned or band-pass filters.
Fig.1:(a) Single- tuned (b) 1st order high-pass (c) 2nd order high-
pass (d)3rd order high-pass (e) C-type.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF
PASSIVE FILTER OVER ACTIVE FILTER
Advantages of Passive Filter over Active Filter:
• Less costly than active filter.
• Passive filters can be used for small loads as well as large
loads in a power system.
Disadvantages of Passive Filter over Active Filter:
• Circuit becomes bulky as inductors are used.

ADVANTAGES
• Total harmonic distortion of current obtained is 25.51%
• Three winding transformer is use.
• Economical and essential way for harmonic reduction is use.
• Reduces 5th ,7th 11th and higher order harmonics .
DISADVANTAGES
• All filters are kept active all the time.
• This protection scheme is use only for low and medium
industrial system.
CONCLUSION
In this project, three-phase passive filter not only reducing for 11th
harmonic but also considering for distortion of 5th and 7th harmonic of the
system where harmonics are produced due to a twelve-pulse converter load.
The distortion of power supply current was diminished to a satisfactory
level with THD = 25.51% and voltage with THD = 26.26%
