Smart Bins
Garbage monitoring system using
IOT/Bluetooth
Overview
The garbage monitoring system is consisted to two
sections
• Section to monitor garbage
• Section to inform concerned authority about the
garbage level.
Instead of using plenty of bins in an unordered
fashion around the city, minimal smart bins can
be used.
Concept
• Level of garbage bin is measured using
ultrasonic sensor.
• Corresponding information to the bin level is
send to the
a) web server using ESP8266 Wi-Fi module.
b) android app using Bluetooth module
• The information can be accessed anywhere over
the internet.
• After knowing the garbage level status the
concerned authority can take the desired action.

Literature review
The concept of smart bins is not new, it has been in talks for
much of the time .In fact it is already being implemented is
some parts of the world. Various authors have published their
papers regarding smart bins. Some of these are as follows
• Narayan Sharma, Nirman Singha, Tanmoy Dutta, “Smart Bin
Implementation for Smart Cities”, International Journal of
Scientific & Engineering Research, Volume 6, Issue 9,
September-2015
In this they have equipped the smart bins with ultrasonic
sensors which measure the level of dustbin being filled up.
The container is divided into three levels(h/3, 2h/3, h) of
garbage being collected in it. Every time the garbage crosses a
level the sensors receives the data of the filled level. This data
is further sent to the garbage analyzer as instant message
using GSM module.

research in electrical, electronics, instrumentation and control
engineering Vol. 4, Issue 4, April 2016
In this they have build built a framework in which a Camera will
be set at each garbage collection point alongside load cell
sensor at base of the trash can. The camera will take
continuous snapshots of the garbage can. A threshold level is
set which compares the output of camera and load sensor.
The comparison is done with help of microcontroller. After
analyzing the image and the load cell sensor an idea about
level and weight of garbage can be known. Accordingly
information is processed i.e controller checks if the threshold
level is exceeded or not.
This method is expensive and practically not feasible.
Feasibility
The feasibility of this project depends upon the
• Durability
• Affordability
• Prevention against damage
• Maintenance issues
Of these smart dustbins.
Since the technology is new in India, proper
awareness should be created among the public
before it is implemented on a large scale. Otherwise,
sensitive devices like sensors might be damaged due
to rough action of the users.
Practical uses
• Accurate estimate of garbage can be done with
increasing no. to ultrasonic sensor to measure
height and width of garbage. Then this concept
can be applied to big garbage bin that municipal
cooperation puts in an area. thereafter MC will
know when to collect garbage hence requirement
of manpower will be reduced.
• At small level, the concept can be applied to
house dustbins so that person collecting the
garbage from houses get informed.
Future work
• With the proper usage of IOT principles integration
of many bins each with a unique ID can be done.
• And a database for each bin can be maintained by
using SQL technology.
• Using methane and smell sensors, differentiation
can be made between dry trash bin and wet trash
bin collecting plastic dry waste and biodegradable
waste respectively.
• an automated system can be developed which is able
to pick up waste in and around the bin, segregate
them and put them in respective bins.
