Editor's Notes

  • #3: Why I'm talking to you today: 1. I am responsible for a majority of my organization's social media efforts.   -Started and continue to develop and oversee OSA's podcast - Initiated the use of Twitter for members at Meetings - Developed online communities for membership groups - located on CollectiveX and Sharepoint - Created Recruitment Contest featuring YouTube videos created by our Chapters (we have 167 worldwide) - Working on the development of online communities for our Technical Divisions - Working on live online streaming of the annual chapter leadership meeting using Twitter and chat to interact with members who can't be present
  • #5: Social media isn’t about the tools – it’s about what the tools enable. Social media cannot exist in a vacuum.  Social media has to be integrated into your organization’s overall communications strategy. The tools that you want to use are dependent on what you want to accomplish. There’s no social media tool continuum that lays out all social media tools from least beneficial to most beneficial.  No chart that says blogs are the best tool to use when you’re first starting out with social media.  The tools that you use (and how you use them) are entirely dependent on what you want to accomplish.  I can’t tell you what tool you should get started with until we determine what your goal is.   There need to be at least four groups represented -    1. people who “get” social media,    2. representatives from the communications or public affairs group who can speak to the organization’s communications strategy,    3. people from the IT department who understand the technical architecture, rules and policies of the organization,    4. and someone who really understands the organization’s mission - the person who is deeply involved with the organization’s overall strategies.
  • #6: -Started and continue to develop and oversee OSA's podcast - Initiated the use of Twitter for members at Meetings - Developed online communities for membership groups - located on CollectiveX and Sharepoint - Created Recruitment Contest featuring YouTube videos created by our Chapters (we have 167 worldwide) - Working on the development of online communities for our Technical Divisions - Working on live online streaming of the annual chapter leadership meeting using Twitter and chat to interact with members who can't be present
  • #7: Optics & Photonics News (OPN) is the Optical Society of America's monthly news magazine.    recent developments in the field of optics and focuses on science and society, education, technology and business.    The audience consists of researchers, engineers, businesspeople and students.    Contributors include scientists and journalists who specialize in the field of optics.   OPN's goal is to promote the magazine and draw people to their online content that is not available in print.
  • #9: Optics InfoBase is OSA's online repository of current and past volumes of all its journals. It also contains proceedings from OSA conferences.    The focus with InfoBase development has been more on personalization, categorization, and cross linking than on “social media.”    Here is short list of “interactive” services, some of the social interact comes through revealing others’ behavior (who is citing whom, who is downloading whom, etc.): •    Export to social bookmarking cites •    Provide tools for exporting articles and other metadata into citation management systems. •    Generated links to articles that cite an article. •    Display behavior of other readers, like top-downloaded articles. •    Display tag cloud of most popular OCIS codes and categories for a given period. •    Show articles related to the article being viewed. •    Provide custom e-mail alerts and RSS feeds. •    Provide filters for categorizing and narrowing search results. •    Provide opportunities for publishing and interacting with growing number of non-text items: video, tabular data, computer code
  • #10: Google alerts Google Alerts are emails automatically sent to you when there are new Google results for your search terms. You can also choose to have your alerts delivered via feed to the feedreader of your choice (e.g., Google Reader or add the feed to your iGoogle page). They currently offer alerts with results from News, Web, Blogs, Video and Groups.   TweetLater TweetLater can be used to set up alerts and track keywords in the public Twitter stream. TweetLater monitors the Twitter tweet stream and periodically emails you a digest of the tweets that contain those keywords. You can also use this to track your @replies.
  • #11: Another great thing you can get from TweetLater is the Twitter aliases who are commenting on your topic area or Society. For example, some of the people who post information you put out are not your members...   1. You can get new members this way 2. You can identify current very vocal members this way 3. You can also view these sources as outlets for your news...how many followers do they have? Transparency is the expectation today.
  • #12: Tweet Later Features   Schedule tweets — Plan, set & forget! [more] Schedule tweets and keep your Twitter stream ticking over with new tweets even when you're not in front of your computer. Publish tweets when your international followers are online and you're asleep. Track keywords on Twitter —  Set up alerts and track keywords in the public Twitter stream . We will monitor the Twitter tweet stream and periodically email you a digest of the tweets that contain those keywords. You can also use this to track your @replies. Save and reuse drafts Save draft tweets, frequently used text snippets and URLs and reuse them in your scheduled tweets. Save tons of time by avoiding repetitive typing. Send a nice non-promotional DM to new followers that focus on them and your future interaction with them, or simply to thank them for choosing to follow you. Bit.ly URL shortening — Track those clicks! [more] Add your bit.ly URL shortening account details to your TweetLater profile, and we will shorten your links with it so that you can track the clicks on all your links. Follow those who follow you — Automate! [more] Automatically follow people who follow you and save a ton of time while your Friends list builds itself. Unfollow those who unfollow you — Automate! [more] Automatically unfollow someone when they unfollow you if that is how you prefer to manage your Friends list. Vet new followers — Semi-automation! [more] Even though you've selected to auto follow new followers, we will interrupt the process for 72 hours and give you an opportunity to manually review new followers and decide if you want to follow, ignore, or block each new follower. Purge your DM Inbox — Keep it tidy! [more] You will probably agree that it's a bit of a pain to manually delete DMs from your Inbox, especially since they accumulate so quickly. You can run a purge on your Inbox to delete everything, or DMs older than 7 days, or DMs older than 30 days. Personal status feed — Your own tweet engine! [more] Grab your own personal 140-character tweet scheduling engine and RSS feed . You can schedule and publish tweets that don't go to Twitter, they go to your personal tweet stream, which is available in RSS, XML and Javascript formats. Unlimited Twitter accounts —
