SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT AND THEORIES OF SOCIAL
DEVELOPMENT
Social Development: Why is it important?
Social skills include various abilities such as communication,
problem solving, decision making, self management and peer
relations. If a child does not display appropriate social skills, other
children will not like him/her . The teacher can help students how to
cope with such social problems. The children spend much of their
time in families , peers in schools. The kids need healthy social and
emotional skills.

1-Mary Ainsworth 1913 to 1999
Mary Ainsworth was an American child development
psychologist. Her work on emotional attachment of infants to their
caregivers is well known. She founded four different categories of
attachment: securely attached, avoidant- in securely attached,
anxious-ambivalently attached and disorganized - disoriented
attached. To her attachment patterns developed in infancy remains
fairly established throughout the lifespan. The parents and teachers
help child to develop positive social relations in future

3-Vygotsky 1896 to 1934
Vygotsky was born in western Russia. he is well known
theorist in the area of social development and education. he claimed
that cognitive functions are linked to the external /social world. He
said, “the children learn in a systematic and logical way as a result of
dialogue and interaction with the skilled helper with the zone of
proximal development” (ZPD)
ZPD has two boundaries. Lower boundary is that the learner
can do activities independently. An upper limit of ZPD is those
outcomes (SLOs) that the learner cannot achieve even with the help
of competent teacher 13

 scaffolding is another concept that the teacher changes the level of
support as the learner needs change.
 Here the teacher is involved at each step of learning. The teacher
gradually decreases the support as he observes that the child can
perform independently. In this way we can describe how a child
becomes socially competent.

4-Albert bandura: born in 1925 in Canada
He is also famous for his social learning theory now renamed as
“social cognitive theory”
 To build or a development of social competence depends upon the
three factors
1. Behaviors: children and adults can be observed within their home
or society.
2. Mental factors: students' own expectations of success.
3. Social factors: classroom and social climate.

DEVELOPMENT
4-Albert bandura: born in 1925 in Canada
Bendura’s reciprocal determinism model indicates that these
three factors are mutually related. Each factor affects others equally
and changes in one will result changes in the others. For example a
child's belief about him herself and his competence can affect social
behaviors. And will have impact on classroom environment and vice
versa
