This document discusses a subarray multiple-input multiple-output (SMIMO) radar system that combines advantages of phased array radars and MIMO radars. The SMIMO radar divides the transmit and receive antenna arrays into overlapping or non-overlapping subarrays that can vary in the number of elements. This provides flexibility to adapt the radar configuration based on detection needs. The performance of the SMIMO radar is analyzed based on factors like the virtual array size, maximum detectable targets, angle resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and detection probability. Simulation results show the SMIMO radar outperforms other radar types in these areas due to its adaptive subarray approach.
