TEACHERS PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND THE ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE OF THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
IN BAYUIN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

ABSTRACT
This study aims to determine the extent of teacher’s professional
competence and the academic performance of the Senior High School Students
in Bayuin National High School.
Specifically, this study seeks answers to the following questions:
1. What is the extent of Teachers Professional Competence in terms of:
1.1 Monitors Students Progress;
1.2 Medium of Instruction?
2. What is the level of Academic Performance in terms of:
2.1 Motivation?
3. Is there a significant relationship between Teachers Professional Competence
and the Academic Performance of the Senior High School Students in Bayuin
National High School?
Summary of Findings
1. Teachers Professional Competence
1.1 Monitors Students Progress
Item number three which states that the teacher always evaluates
students ‘performance through activities (recitation, quizzes and others) ranked
ii
the highest as it obtained the highest mean score of 4.52 . On the other hand,
item number one ranked the lowest obtained 4.19 which means teachers often
adjusts instructional strategies to better meet students' needs. The overall mean
score obtained 4.34 which means that the teacher often monitor the progress of
the students in school.
1.2 Medium of Instruction
Item number four ranked the highest as it obtained the highest mean
score of 4.53 which shows that the teacher in Bayuin National High School
always sets rules and regulations inside the class. However, item number five
ranked the lowest which means that the teacher often capacitates in the different
group activities like theatre act, speech and role playing. The overall mean
obtained 4.35 which means that the teacher often implement instructions.
2. Academic Performance
2.1 Motivation
Item number one ranked the highest as it obtained the highest mean score
of 4.28 which shows that the teacher inspires students to participate and
cooperate actively in the lessons by sharing their experiences. However, item
number three ranked the lowest obtained 3.85 which means that the teacher
often gives incentives to the students who perform well in class. The overall
mean obtained 4.11 which shows that the students often motivated in school.
Conclusions
From the aforementioned findings, the following conclusions were formulated:

1. Student-respondents perceived that their teacher always demonstrates
competency in terms of monitors students’ progress and medium of instruction.
2. Student-respondents perceived that they often inspires and encourage inside
the class in terms of motivation.
3. The teacher’s professional competence relates significantly to the academic
performance of the Senior High School Students in Bayuin National High School.
Recommendations
1. Teachers should maintain their commitment in teaching and continue
improving their teaching practices and strategies.
2. Students should continue on finding ways on how to achieve satisfying
classroom performance through motivation.
3. Future researcher should conduct a further study about other variables
regarding the relationship of teachers teaching effectiveness and academic
performance to strengthen its findings.
