Evaluation to PMI UK “Transforming
the Net Zero Landscape through the
Power of Projects”
PDATF Climate and Nature Emergency
Workstream
22 October 2021
Donnie MacNicol, Jo Jolly and Jonathan Williams
Climate and Nature Workstream Co-Leads
Donnie MacNicol works across multiple sectors energising
leaders and teams delivering complex change
to maximise value and certainty of success through a focus
on the human dimension.
Jo Jolly is a Deputy Director in the Environment Agency and
leads their newly formed Bespoke & Emerging Projects
team.
Jonathan Williams is a Project Manager at the Environment
Agency as well as an apprentice at the Project Data Analyst
Academy and is helping the Environment Agency realise the
opportunities that project data analytics can provide to
improve project delivery performance.

How are we doing?
The probability of delivering a major
project within cost, time and benefits
is 0.5%.
• 1 in 3 hours worked in the UK are
spent working on projects
• productivity has stagnated
• We value the human factors in project delivery
and can even predict project performance
• We drive out waste through the sharing of data
on a scale we haven’t yet seen
• Every project delivers benefits far beyond their
original stated purpose

Question to answer
Workstream questions we are
looking to address
1. As project / data
professionals what can we
do in our own sphere of
influence?
2. How well are we doing and
what can done to make the
biggest impact?
3. How can we share what is
working and deal with
systemic challenges?
4. What impact are the
myriad of strategies and
policies around NetZero
having on what we do and
how we do it?
Answering practitioners questions
Where am I now
on my project in
terms of Carbon?
What should I be
considering wrt
Carbon in my
projects?
How do I compare
with other people in
my sector?
What can I learn
from others or
share with others
if doing well?
What influence can
I have and what do I
need to achieve
this?
… raise your awareness, be better informed, challenge and motivate yourself to
make positive choices regarding Carbon on your projects using the power of data
We all need to start somewhere by
making changes – large or small,
personally and professionally.
Carbon Self-Evaluation
1
We either don’t do it
or it is chaotic and
ad-hoc
5 We are continually
optimising and
improving on our
embedded approach
1. Data Engagement - Is Carbon being discussed within
my organisation?
2. Data Access - What access do I have to any data regarding
Carbon from a projects perspective?
3. Data Quality - What is the quality of the data that we do
have in relation to Carbon in projects?
4. Data Skills - What skills and knowledge do I have / am I
being supported to obtain wrt Carbon?
5. Data Solutions Development - What solutions / tools exist
to help identify, analyse, share etc data on Carbon?
+ Project Methodology
Personal reporting

Sharing wisdom
• As part of the CSE we ask you:
• “What you do / could do”
• “Challenges you face”
• Capture and share back in your report
• Curate and analyse to allow us to:
• Share with responders insights as quickly as possible
• Identify themes
• Inform the 6 Workstreams around challenges
• Hold mirror up – provide industry leaders a reality
check on lived experience
• Challenge effectiveness of policies and strategies
• Improve cross sector sharing and learning
• Start publishing reports and insights and also sharing
at events
In advance of COP26 in
November this year
1. Launch the CSE (with
support from the PMI et
al)
2. Obtain and analyse
any initial data and gain
initial insights
3. Publish preliminary
findings (if available)
4. Engage with industry
leaders to discuss initial
findings (if available)
Phase 1 Analysis
A number of questions to answer including….
“What impact are the myriad of strategies
and policies around NetZero having on what
we do and how we do it?”
Potential Phase 2 Activities
• Introduce company specific CSE completion
• Enhance the reports based on the available data
• Create a community discussion around what people are
doing and how they are overcoming challenges
• Help prioritise the 6 workstreams within the Project Data
Analytics Task Force (PDATF)
Problem
HOW
“As a project delivery community don’t
underestimate our immense collective
power, and our ability to make a
difference.”
We have a choice

Editor's Notes

  • #6: Climate change – whether through a gradual or catastrophic increase in temperature is the greatest threat to humanity We all have a part to play The Task Force realise that project and data professionals have expertise and can positively influence the discussion For that reason we will be prioritising our efforts on the workstreams so playing our part We would like your support
  • #13: Climate change – whether through a gradual or catastrophic increase in temperature is the greatest threat to humanity We all have a part to play The Task Force realise that project and data professionals have expertise and can positively influence the discussion For that reason we will be prioritising our efforts on the workstreams so playing our part We would like your support
  • #23: NOT just projects / data – anyone who works around projects Phase 1 as up to COP26 in October 2021 in Glasgow Stimulate and motivate – diagnostic/ questionnaire – FIRST STEP Primary aim Secondary aim is to gather comparative data Capture and share your wisdom – thoughts, examples from what you and your organisation are doing Empower you through information That you can use parctically Using the data collected earlier report back on how well you are doing Provide suggestions for what action you can take personally Prioritise the Task Force efforts – prioritised against the PDATF workstreams + Hackathons + development of solutions Help refine task force workstreams to achieve NetZero - Which ones would make the greatest difference, just like in the broader world Create a Carbon Challenge map to demonstrate the scale of the challenge and what are the priorities Future phases Future phases is engaging at an organisational level – could you get your organisation to contribute? This will answer the Questions How well are we doing and what can done to make the biggest impact? “As professionals what can we do in our own sphere of influence?”
  • #26: Climate change – whether through a gradual or catastrophic increase in temperature is the greatest threat to humanity We all have a part to play The Task Force realise that project and data professionals have expertise and can positively influence the discussion For that reason we will be prioritising our efforts on the workstreams so playing our part We would like your support
  • #27: The insight you provide will then allow us to do Inform profession By analysing the data we can identify areas where we are doing well and areas of concern We can then inform the project and data professions as to how well the communities they represent are or are not responding to the challenge of achieving #NetZero We hope to have insights to share by COP26 Challenge decision makers Provide data as to how the strategies / policies world are or are not filtering down to the people delivering projects / managing the data During Phase 1 we will focus on the built environment…… Learn from this and apply our insights to other industries Develop data driven solutions look to create practical solutions to make a difference e.g. consolidation / simplification of regulated reporting, That will be freely available This will answer the question “What impact are the myriad of strategies and policies around NetZero having on what we do and how we do it?”
