TIME MANAGEMENT
HALL OF FAME:
WORST TIME
MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES.
EVER.
(ASHLEIGH BRIGHT,
FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE
YEARS OF COLLEGE)
HA!
GOOD LUCK FINDING ANYTHING.
(LIKE THE DUE DATE FOR MY ENGLISH PAPER.)
NOPE
AN EXERCISE IN FUTILITY.
THIS ACTUALLY
WORKED!
...UNTIL I LEFT IT AT ONE WORLD.
(PROMPTLY REPLACED WITH A WALL CALENDAR.)
LET’S CHAT ABOUT IT!
What sort of Time management
methods do you use currently?
HOW CAN TIME
MANAGEMENT SKILLS
HELP YOU?
• LESS STRESS
• REACH GOALS IN CLASSES
• FREE TIME IS RELAXING
How do we make time management
effective?
• Identify your priorities – your goals for the day and the semester
• Make the schedule visible and easy to access
• Create an Action Plan
• Get Organized
• Breathe!
Identifying Priorities
What goes into your schedule
• Some key things to include:
• Classes
• Study time
• Meals
• Work
• Sleep
• Breaks
Building Your Schedule
• Start with things that have set times that you
can’t change
• Classes and work are examples
• Add in study times
• Try to keep these between 1 – 1.5 hours
• Don’t forget meals, breaks, and other activities!
Class times
go in first!
Next, we
add in work.
Now it’s
time for
homework
and study
times!
Notice that
these blocks
are just an
hour long
Don’t forget
to sleep!
Find time
to eat
Breaks are
really
important!
Make sure to
include them
in your
schedule.
• Planning for
every hour of
the day can
be
overwhelming
• Include as
much detail
as you need
Schedule Building & Online Classes
Making structure for yourself
• Online courses can provide a lot of scheduling freedom
• It’s important to give yourself from structure
• Building your own structure can help with motivation and keep
you on top of the work
• Remember to be specific!
• Say exactly what you plan on doing during the time you
block out

Making Your Schedule Visible
Find the method that works for you
• It’s important to make your schedule visible
• Actually recording what you need to do can help motivate you
to do it
• You can use:
• Paper planner
• Your phone/Outlook
• Organizational apps
• Wall Calendar/White board
Making Your Schedule Visible
Find the scale that works for you
• Semester
• Monthly
• Weekly
• Daily
Semester Schedule
• Great for finding trends in
your semester
• Can identify busy weeks and
plan ahead
• Unfortunately, you don’t have
a lot of detail about what is
happening each week/day
Semester Schedule
The syllabus – the secret study
guide
• Contains important
information & dates
• Consider the course
schedule as a study
template – you can plan
your studying in advance
Semester Schedule
• Open the Excel 2021
Academic Calendar Handout.
• How many weeks are there
until midterms?
• What do you need to
complete by then?
DO YOU FEEL
OVERWHELMED?
HAVE YOU FOUND A
WAY OF STUDYING
THAT YOU ENJOY?
(THAT IS MORE OR
LESS PLEASANT?
THAT YOU FEEL IS
EFFECTIVE?)
PROCRASTINATION:
THE SCHEDULE KILLER
DOES STRESS KEEP YOU
FROM STARTING BIG
PROJECTS?
TRY AN ACTION PLAN!
DO YOU STUDY BETTER AT
A SPECIFIC TIME OF DAY?
INCLUDE THAT INTO YOUR SCHEDULE!
DO YOU STUDY BETTER
WITH PEERS?
TRY SI PASS, STUDY GROUPS, OR
TUTORING!
HEAD OFF
PROCRASTINATION
BEFORE IT STARTS
Create An Action Plan
Time Management for Specific Tasks
Action Plan
• An action plan is a way of taking a large task and breaking it up
into smaller, more manageable pieces
• You can action plan big projects, homework assignments,
study sessions, or anything else!
• When making your action plan, it is important to include
intermediate deadlines
• These deadlines can help prevent procrastination
Action Plan Your Study Plan
• Develop a study plan for you a class you have right now
• Study Chapter 6 of Biology: Deadline – Feb 26
• Skim the chapter in the textbook – 2/17
• Attend Zoom Lectures – 2/20, 2/22, 2/24
• Take detailed notes
• Write down all important terms/concepts on one page – 2/21
• Try out practice problems – 2/23
• Write 2-3 sentence summaries for each section of notes – 2/24
Action Plan A Paper
• Develop a plan to write a paper
• Complete English paper – Due 2/28
• Find 3 sources – 2/16
• Develop a thesis statement – 2/18
• Write an extended outline – 2/20
• Have 1000 words written – 2/22
• Have 2500 words written – 2/23
• Have 4000 words written – 2/24
• Submit rough draft to Writing
Center – 2/25
• Edit and review – 2/27
• Submit paper – 2/28
Action Plan Your Day
• You can think of this like a structured to-do list!
• Plan for 2/24
• Check email and respond – 8 to 9 AM
• Attend Zoom Lecture for ECON – 9:30 AM
• Summarize notes after lecture – 10:30 – 11 AM
• Break
• Take notes on slides and recorded lecture for FLEN – 1 PM
• Break
• Homework – 3 to 5 PM
The Pomodoro Technique
Time management for the small scale
• Organize how you work
• Understand the task – break it into chunks (pomodoros)
• For each 25 minutes of intense focus, give yourself a 5 minute
break
• 25 minute session = 1 Pomodoro
• 1 Pomodoro = 5 minute break
• 4 Pomodoros (100 minutes) = 30 minute break
Finding a Place to Work
How to set up your space
• Having a dedicated space for working on schoolwork can help
add consistency to your day-to-day, online schedule
• Try to avoid working in your bed when possible
• If you have to; try working at the end of your bed you
don’t normally sleep on
• Keep things like notebooks, writing utensils, headphones, and
charging cords nearby
Things To Keep In Mind
Why your time management needs to be flexible
• Priorities change
• Life happens
• A good plan can be improved
• Things don’t always go according to plan
• You might have extra time
• You might have less time
• Other people might need your help
