1.PAN(Personal Area Network)
A personal area network -PAN - is a computer network
organized around an individual person.
University of Education Okara Campus
3
2.LAN(Local Area Network)
A LAN connects network devices over a relatively short
distance.
University of Education Okara Campus
4
3.MAN(Metropoliton Area Network)
A network spanning a physical area larger than a LAN but smaller
than a WAN, such as a city.
University of Education Okara Campus
5
4.WAN(Wide Area Network)
A WAN differs from a LAN in several important ways. Most
WANs (like the Internet) are not owned by any one organization
but rather exist under collective or distributed ownership and
management.
University of Education Okara Campus
6
5.SAN(Storage Area Network)
A storage area network(SAN) is a type of local area
network (LAN) designed to handle large data transfers.
University of Education Okara Campus
7
6.Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a wireless networking technology designed for
very short-range connections(Typically just a few metres).
University of Education Okara Campus
8
7.VPN(Virtual Private Network)
The virtual private network (VPN) technology included in
Windows Server 2003 helps enable cost-effective, secure remote
access to private networks.
University of Education Okara Campus
9
8.WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network)
A wireless LAN (WLAN) is a LAN that uses radio signals (WIFI)
to connect computers instead of cables.

Editor's Notes

  • #4: Personal area networks typically involve a mobile computer, a cell phone and/or a handheld computing device such as a PDA. You can use these networks to transfer files including email and calendar appointments, digital photos and music.
  • #5: A networked office building, school, or home usually contains a single LAN, though sometimes one building will contain a few small LANs (perhaps one per room), and occasionally a LAN will span a group of nearby buildings. In TCP/IP networking, a LAN is often but not always implemented as a single IPsubnet .
  • #6: A MAN is typically owned an operated by a single entity such as a government body or large corporation.
  • #7: WANs tend to use technology like ATM, Frame Relay and X.25 for connectivity over the longer distances.
  • #8: A SAN typically supports data storage, retrieval and replication on business networks using high-end servers, multiple disk arrays and Fibre Channelinterconnection technology.
  • #9: The idea of Bluetooth is to get rid of the need for all those cables(e.g. USB cables) that connect our computer to peripheral devices such as printers, mouse, keyboards etc.
  • #10: VPN allows administrators to take advantage of the Internet to help provide the functionality and security of private WAN connections at a lower cost. In Windows Server 2003, VPN is enabled using the Routing and Remote Access service. VPN is part of a comprehensive network access solution that includes support for authentication and authorization services, and advanced network security technologies.
  • #11: At the centre of the WLAN is a wireless switch or router – a small box with one or two antennas sticking out the back – used for sending and receiving data to the computer. (Most laptops have a wireless antenna built into the case.)
