Unit 3- Reconstruction
 I. Former slaves go back to the fields
 A. Sharecropping- land divided up on
plantations, shared crops with land owners
 B. Tenant Farming- Rented land and bought
tools, kept rest of the profit
 II. Ku Klux Klan- Terrorist organization that
started as a club
 Used violence (lynching, arson) to achieve
 1. White supremacy, get rid of Republicans
 2. Keep blacks from voting or running for
office
 III. Republicans lose power
 A. Amnesty Act- Allowed 140,000 Confederates
vote and run for office (Democrats)
 B. Grant scandals and problems
 1. Whiskey Ring- Officials bribed by whiskey
makers that paid no taxes
 2. Panic of 1873- 5 year economic depression
 IV. Democrats “redeem” the South
 A. Redemption- Democrats back in power
 B. Compromise of 1877
 1. Samuel Tilden (D) wins popular vote against
Rutherford B. Hayes but 1 electoral vote short
 2. Dems let Hayes win, but troops are removed
from the South, ending Reconstruction
 3. Democrats achieve home rule- running the
state (rights of blacks restricted)
 V. Successes of Reconstruction
 A. Many black colleges founded
 B. Increases % of literate blacks
 C. 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments
