After the Civil War, former slaves went back to working in the fields through exploitative systems like sharecropping and tenant farming. The Ku Klux Klan emerged as a terrorist organization that used violence to intimidate blacks and Republicans in order to reinstate white supremacy and prevent blacks from voting. As scandals weakened the Republican Party's control, Democrats took back power in Southern states in the late 1870s. This ended the Reconstruction era and allowed Southern Democrats to restrict the rights of blacks through "home rule" policies.
