- 17. People used to connect via their phone-line Known as dial-up Slow rate of 56kbps (kilo-bits per second). We tend to say 56k Phone line tied up Faster connections (128k) could be offered if you had a special phone line This was called ISDN This is what we had at Redhill BT developed a technology called ADSL which allowed an ordinary phone line to be shared by the Internet and calls Speeds rose to 512kbps (512k) Some companies offered 256k as well Tier of packages became available for different prices Take up of ADSL was that BT could only provide it if your local telephone exchange had been upgraded into a more digital one It got slower the further you lived away from it Therefore towns (urban customers) got it first, and ended some years later with those in the countryside (rural customers) BT offered to upgrade rural areas earlier than planned if they could ‘recruit’ a certain number of potential customers Campaigns sprang us to attempt to reach the targets set by BT Where dial-up ends and broadband begins is a matter for debate… Some think 128k and above… Others think 512k when the much faster speed really makes a difference, delivering images and video more effectively Another milestone was the speed 1000kbps No one in the industry called it that though, it is known as 1Mbps- one megabit per second (1M for short) Mega = million 1000 thousand = 1 mega Packages could become confusing at this stage… 56k, 512k and 1M were common Customers tended to notice the change from k to M when they saw the price! Nowadays it is much simpler… The highest, most common speed is 8M Packages such as 1M, 2M and 8M are available and make more sense! 512k (0.5M) no longer offered Cable companies like NTL also started to offer faster speeds. Whilst not ADSL, the idea is the same. Same cable for calls, Internet and TV. Some companies offered a satellite broadband which was usually quite expensive Being always connected to the Internet brings huge benefits. It also made the idea of monthly fees more popular, as opposed to the pay-as-you-go model of being charged per minute TASK: Re-arrange into a flowchart showing how connecting to the Internet has developed
