• Explain communication methods that
meet an individuals communication needs

Profound and multiple
learning disabilities (PMLD)
Law and Policy
It is useful to know about any relevant laws and
policy that can empower a person with profound
and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) to
access advocacy.
In general, people have no legal right to
advocacy.
Mental Capacity Act 2005
This law says that in some situations a person
who lacks capacity is entitled to the support of
an IMCA (Independent Mental Capacity Advocate
).
Visual Schedules
• Visual schedules help people with Autism,
Asperger Syndrome or other additional
needs, to understand their world better.
• Just like adults need calendars, or to
create lists and planners, to help them
remember their important activities for the
day, week or month. Individuals with ASD
(Autism spectrum disorder) may need
visual schedules to support their memory
Example of a visual schedule
Making a visual schedule
• Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) is 28th
February. Put together a visual schedule
to help a service user make pancakes.
Have you met your
objectives?

Communication (AAC)
• AAC
• Augmentative and Alternative Communication
(AAC) is the term used to describe various
methods of communication that can ‘add-on’
to speech and are used to get around
problems with ordinary speech.
AAC includes simple systems such as
pictures, gestures and pointing, as well as
more complex techniques involving powerful
computer technology.
Circle Time

Persona Dolls
• Persona Doll
• Introducing Dolls that do not reflect the
children in the group can promote cross-
cultural respect and understanding.
Persona Dolls
• How can persona dolls be used to help
develop a child’s communication and
language skills?
Have you met your
objectives?
Makaton
• Makaton was first developed in the UK in
the 1970’s. Makaton uses speech as well
as actions and symbols.
• Makaton is extremely flexible as it can be
personalised to an individual's needs and
used at a level suitable for them.
• Marwell Zoo near Winchester has become
the first zoo to gain a Makaton Friendly
award.
Let’s learn some Makaton to
