Hello @camcreatives!
!
We’re on Twitter!

What is User Experience?
"User experience" encompasses all
aspects of the end-user's
interaction with the company, its
services, and its products.
!
- Nielsen Norman Group
“I invented the
term because I
thought human
interface and
usability were too
narrow. I wanted
to cover all aspects
of the person’s
experience with
the system.”
Don Norman
It’s not just about User Interface!
We Are All UX Designers!
“What’s more important than
process is mindset. And when it
comes to interaction design, that
mindset is having empathy for and
understanding your users, and
creating something great for them.”
!
– Peter Merholz
Discovery: user research methods
•Interviews
•Contextual observation (ethnography)
•Usability testing
•Card sorting
•Surveys
•Analytics
We Are All UX Designers!
Stories, in the form of
personas and scenarios,
help others to understand
and empathise with the
needs of users
Want to know more?
“Design thinking is
about creating a
multipolar experience
in which everyone
has the opportunity
to participate in the
conversation.”
- Tim Brown, IDEO
DESIGN STUDIO
What is a Design Studio?
•A collaborative approach which helps teams
to generate lots of design ideas quickly and
refine a design solution together
•A way to explore, and gain a shared
understanding of, users’ problems
•Fun!
Who takes part?
A design studio works best when you invite a
wide range of people with different skills
including designers, developers, project
managers, product managers, marketing,
sales, customer support
How does it work?
1.Explore the design problem
2.Ideation and sketching (individually)
3.Present design ideas to the group
4.Review and critique design ideas
5.Iterate and refine design concept (group)
6.Pitch design concepts
Meet Joanna
and her family
Each year 30-50% of the food
produced in the world is thrown out.
!
Joanna feels frustrated about food waste. She is a busy,
working Mum and wants to do something positive to
reduce her family’s food waste to a minimum.
!
Design a solution which helps Joanna and her family to
reduce her family’s food waste each week.
Get yourselves into groups
Keep to time!
#1 - Explore the design problem
• Read the design problem and persona
•Think about how to solve the persona’s
problem and pain points
5 minutes
#2 - Individual ideation / sketching
•Sketch as many design ideas as possible
10 minutes
#3 - Present back to your group
• Explain your design ideas and how they
solve the design problem and persona’s pain
points
!
!
!
10 minutes
#4 - Critique the designs
• Review all the designs
•Which ones are worth taking forward?
•Don’t be precious! They’re just sketches…
!
15 minutes
#5 - Refine the designs together
• Working in your group, take the best ideas
and refine them
•Nominate someone to sketch the new
design
!
15 minutes
#6 - Pitch!
• Pitch your design concept
•Tell a story about how the design solves the
user’s problem and pain points
!
15 minutes
Let’s recap…
•Diverge and generate lots of design ideas
quickly - good for concept generation
•Converge on the best designs
•Helps the team explore a problem space
and buy into designs early on
•Focuses on solving users’ problems
