Electromagnetic fields are produced by electric charges, both stationary and moving. When charges are stationary, they produce only an electric field, but when in motion they also produce a magnetic field. The electric and magnetic fields combine to form an electromagnetic field, which can transport signals like radio, TV, light, and radiation from the sun. All electric devices and appliances generate electromagnetic fields through their electric and magnetic components.

- 1. What are Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) • You would have studied in school that an electric charge repels a similar electric charge but attracts an opposite electric charge. The influence of an electric charge on another particle located some distance away is termed its field. The strength of this repulsion or attraction is termed the electric field strength. Field strength falls off rapidly with distance, the "Inverse Square" Law. When the electric charges are stationary, they produce only an electric field. When an electric charge is in motion, it produces a magnetic field as well. The electric field and magnetic field caused by a moving electric charge combine & interact to form an electromagnetic field. Radio signals, TV signals are carried over these electromagnetic waves. Light, including sunlight, is also an electromagnetic wave. The sun is the biggest source of electromagnetic radiation reaching the earth. All electric wires, appliances etc generate electric waves, and magnetic waves too if the charges are moving.
