A router is a networking device that connects devices within a home or office network to the internet. It receives data packets from the internal network and routes them to the external internet network, and vice versa. Routers segment the internal network from the internet for security. They also assign IP addresses to devices using DHCP so they can communicate over the network. Common router manufacturers include Cisco, 3Com, HP, Juniper, D-Link, and Nortel.
