What Is the Engineering Design Process? Creative process Problem solving – the big picture No single "correct" solution Technical aspects only small part

IDENTIFY THE CHALLENGE identify what has to be accomplished (the problem) Example: create a video broadcast- public service annoncement regarding their personal “Ecological Footprint” and that of their class and school
2. RESEARCH THE PROBLEM Gather and record what is known Example: go to the websites provided to determine your “Ecological Footprint” http://www.footprintnetwork.org/en/index.php/GFN/page/calculators/ http://www.footprintnetwork.org/en/index.php/GFN/page/personal_footprint http://islandwood.org/kids/impact/footprint/footprint.php http://www.epa.vic.gov.au/ecologicalfootprint/calculators/default.asp http://www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.aspx Establish a plan of procedures Stages of Production Remember to include: story boards, scripts, model sheets, screen snaps
3. DEVELOP POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS List at least 5 ideas to solve your communication challenge Example: mindmap, PMI
4. SELECT THE BEST SOLUTION Identify the resources required for each suggested solution, and compare each solution to the design criteria, refining a modifying it as required
5. CONSTRUCT A PROTOTYPE Build a prototype (working model) of your best solution/design Don’t forget the criteria/constraints /conditions that your broadcast must satisfy (existing industry standards and requirements for the production and broadcast of commercial messages PSA) Example: screen snaps with brief descriptions
6. TEST AND EVALUATE SOLUTION What is required to produce it. Example: what software is required? royalty free media? condensor microphones? Green screen?
7. REDESIGN Did your design solve the challenge? If not brainstorm a new solution – design, build and re-evaluate AGAIN! Example: Survey 10 people and repeat the design process if changes required
COMMUNICATE At each step you must communicate with your team members and others to get feedback on your design solution. You need to communicate verbally as well as describing your design through writing and drawings Example: using one or more of the following : final drawings, TECHNICAL REPORTS, electronic presentations, flow charts, storyboards, prototypes
