What’s new in PMBOK® Guide 6th
Edition
Document Objective: This document focuses on several key areas where the
concepts of PMBOK Guide 5th edition have been revised. It highlights the
changes in Knowledge Areas/Process Groups/Processes as per PMBOK®
Guide 6th Edition.
Background – The Project Management Institute (PMI)® performs a
“Role Delineation Study (RDS)” periodically, every 5 to 7 years . The goal
of this study is to identify what are the project managers around the
world doing in their current projects and the changing trends and
practices in project Management and it updates the content of the exam
as per the result of the study. After the most recent RDS, PMI now has a
list of tasks that the project managers perform, as well as the knowledge
and skills required for the job and upgraded the exam syllabus for PMP
certification and that is why there is an upgrade in PMBOK® Guide as
well which is the single most important publication by the PMI® for
PMP® Certification aspirants to study and prepare for the PMP® Exam.
PMBOK® 6th Edition
• The 6th edition of the Project Management Body of Knowledge
(PMBOK®) Guide was released in September 2017 and PMP®
certification exam format has been revised from March 26,
2018.
• There are several new sections included in the PMBOK® 6th
edition which are as per the changing trends and practices in
project management and they’re all packed into a 976-page
book, The PMBOK® Guide, 6th Edition.
• The most significant addition in PMBOK® 6th edition is a section
containing Agile Development. The Agile concept is
incorporated in all 10 knowledge areas. Each knowledge area
will contain a section entitled Approaches for Agile, Iterative
and Adaptive Environments, describing how these practices
integrate in project settings.
PMBOK® 6th Edition vs. PMBOK® 5th
Edition: What’s Changed?
• Changes in Process Groups
 The number of process groups remains the same in 5th and 6th edition.
• Changes In Knowledge Area
 Two Knowledge Areas names were changed to more closely reflect the work that is
done.
 Project Time Management was changed to Project Schedule Management to
reflect that the project schedule is defined and managed during the project,
whereas time is not managed.
 Both team resources and physical resources are addressed in the Sixth Edition.
Thus, the Knowledge Area Project Human Resource Management was changed
to Project Resource Management.
…as per PMBOK®
• Changes in the number of Processes
There are total 49 processes now in 6th edition as compared to 47
in 5th edition. One process was removed and three new processes
were added in 6th edition, to reflect changes in the way projects
are managed in practice. One process was moved between
Knowledge Areas. These changes are summarized below :
 Manage Project Knowledge —Added.
 Estimate Activity Resources —Moved to Project Resource
Management.
 Control Resources —Added.
 Implement Risk Responses —Added.
 Close Procurements —Eliminated.

• Changes in the name of existing processes
Several process names were changed to improve consistency across the processes
and to improve clarity. Research ndicates that project managers tend to monitor,
facilitate, and manage rather than control, particularly in processes that involve
interactions with people. Therefore, process names for Control Communications,
Control Risks, and Control Stakeholder Engagement were changed to Monitor
Communications, Monitor Risks, and Monitor Stakeholder Engagement. The list
below summarizes all the process name changes:
 Perform Quality Assurance (Section 8.2)—Changed to Manage Quality.
 Plan Human Resource Management (Section 9.1)—Changed to Plan Resource Management.
 Acquire Project Team (Section 9.2)—Changed to Acquire Resources.
 Develop Project Team (Section 9.3)—Changed to Develop Team.
 Manage Project Team (Section 9.4)—Changed to Manage Team.
 Control Communications (Section 10.3)—Changed to Monitor Communications
 Control Risks (Section 11.6)—Changed to Monitor Risks.
 Plan Stakeholder Management (Section 13.2)—Changed to Plan Stakeholder Engagement.
 Control Stakeholder Engagement (Section 13.4)—Changed to Monitor Stakeholder Engagement.
…as per PMBOK®

• THE ROLE OF THE PROJECT MANAGER - New section in
6th Edition
This is a new section that outlines the project manager’s
role in the team. It includes information on the project
manager’s sphere of influence and competencies. PMI’s
Talent Triangle® is discussed with its emphasis on strategic
and business management skills, technical project
management skills, and leadership skills. Leadership styles
and personality are also discussed as part of this section.
The final part of this section focuses on the project
manager as an integrator.
…as per PMBOK®

• AGILE – New Section added in 6th edition
Since the Fifth Edition of the PMBOK® Guide
there has been more adoption of agile and
adaptive methodologies in the management of
projects. The Sixth Edition has included a
subsection called Considerations for Adaptive
Environments at the beginning of Sections 4
through 13. Some agile-specific tools and
techniques have been introduced into the
PMBOK® Guide, such as sprint and iteration
planning.
